MELBOURNE, FLA. - In this edition of Beyond The Game, we are featuring Joseph Phan from Florida Tech Baseball. Joseph is a Senior infielder from Boynton Beach, Florida, studying Mechanical Engineering.
What is your major, and why did you choose it?
My major is mechanical engineering, and the reason why I chose it is because I like the idea of making designs and turning them into functional systems.
What do you plan on doing with your major after graduating from Florida Tech?
I plan on becoming a project engineer for a company and working on big projects for the world.
What is one thing you've been able to bring from the diamond to the classroom?
One thing I would say that I would bring from baseball is a strong work ethic. I always show up to the field prepared and ready to go, so I try to bring that same mentality to the classroom.
Is there a class or a professor that has really stood out to you at Florida Tech?
Physics with Dr. Harris because he is an awesome teacher and he makes learning fun. Another class I have really enjoyed is my senior design class because we are building a project for a big company and its awesome to build stuff for the real world.
How has your time at Florida Tech made you grow as a person?
During my time here, I have created a lot of long-lasting relationships with my teammates and classmates, which makes the time here that much more special.
As a senior, what is one piece of advice you'd give to a new freshman or incoming student?
One thing I would say is don't procrastinate, finish your work on time. It makes academics here a lot easier if you stay on top of the workload instead of cramming everything in.
