Murphy Sets the Tone in Win over Embry-Riddle

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Sammy Murphy set the tone in the circle and Florida Tech backed her with a big sixth inning to roll past Embry-Riddle 7–1. The Panthers broke it open late after a tight start, pulling away behind impressive at-bats, leading to free passes and clutch hits.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Murphy got the start in the circle for Florida Tech and set the tone early, working out of traffic in the first and stranding runners in scoring position.
  • In the opening inning, Chloe Fariello reached on a single and Miranda Schwartz doubled before Emma Chisholm brought home the run with a sacrifice fly.
  • Murphy continued to deal through the second and third, keeping Embry-Riddle off the board allowing just one hit.
  • She ended another threat after allowing the first two batters on base by striking two Eagles out.
  • The Panthers added on in the fifth inning with back-to-back doubles from Schwartz and Chisholm to extend the lead to 3–0.
  • Embry-Riddle got one back in the sixth, but Murphy and the defense minimized the threat when she threw someone out on a squeeze play at home followed by Kate Rodel catching a runner stealing at second base.
  • Tech broke the game open in the sixth inning, drawing five walks among the first six batters for two runs then two more came by a two-RBI single from Malaya Nelson to push the Panthers advantage to 7–1.
  • Murphy closed it out strong, retiring the side in the seventh on groundouts to secure the 7–1 win for the Panthers.
NOTABLE PANTHERS: BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Panthers increased their lead in the all-time series to 16-14 and 12-5 at home.
  • Murphy reached 150 punchouts for her career, becoming the 14th pitcher in program history to tally that many and join Alex Hendrian as the only Panther pitchers to reach that mark in the 2020s. 
UP NEXT: Florida Tech aims to take the Kármán Clash series from Embry-Riddle on Saturday, April 11 at Nancy Bottge Field. The first game of the double header will begin at 1 p.m. ET.
