Fifth Inning Troubles Cost Panthers versus Tampa

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Despite allowing just three hits, free passes and an error led to a bad top of the fifth inning where Florida Tech allowed four runs in a 4-0 loss to Tampa on Friday night.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Tech got a strong start in the circle from Sammy Murphy, who set the tone early by attacking the zone and striking out the first two batter.
  • Murphy added another strikeout in the second inning.
  • The Panthers' pitcher walked the first batter in the third but created three consecutive pop outs to get out of the inning.
  • Tampa capitalized on an error, putting the first batter on then following two straight singles the next three batters were either hit by a pitch or walked to bring home three runs.
  • One more run came across via sacrifice fly for a 4-0 Panther deficit.
  • Haley Rider broke the no-hitter lacing a ball to right field but her pinch runner was tagged out on a line out double play, so Tech remained scoreless.
  • Murphy held the Spartans to one hit and a walk in the last two innings but kept the Panthers alive in the bottom of the seventh.
  • In the bottom of the seventh inning, the first two batters of Emma Chisholm and Malaya Nelson singled but left stranded to end the game losing 4-0 to Tampa. 
NOTABLE PANTHERS: UP NEXT: The Panthers attempt to take both games of a doubleheader against Tampa on Saturday, April 25, at noon following Senior Day festivities.
