Agents and Your Amateurism

A student-athlete must be an amateur in their sport to compete in intercollegiate athletics.  A student-athlete will lose his/her eligibility for intercollegiate competition if:
  • Sign a contract/commitment to play professional sports
  • Uses his/her athletic skill (directly or indirectly) for pay in any form in their sport
  • Enters a professional draft
  • Accepts a promise of pay
  • Enters into an agreement (written, oral, handshake) with an agent
  • Competes on a professional team even if no pay or remuneration for expenses is received (except for tennis and golf)
  • Receives (directly or indirectly) a salary, reimbursement of expenses or any other form of financial assistance from a professional sports organization.
  • An agent or talent scout is any individual other than your parents or legal guardians that markets your athletic ability for the purpose of professional competition. If you or any of your family members are approached by an agent or talent scout regarding your ability for professional athletics, you must inform your coach and the Compliance Office immediately. Failure to do so could result in a loss of eligibility for intercollegiate athletics and possible forfeiture of games.
If you wish to pursue your options for a professional athletic career, you must contact the Compliance Office to discuss such options.
