Bill Macom

As he begins his 14th year as Florida Tech's Director of Tennis, Bill Macom will be hoping to improve upon his 466 career wins. His women finished at 26th nationally last season and the men just missed out on the Top 50. Both teams qualified for the SSC Tournament and Alahna Reto was named First Team All SSC Singles. Both teams were recognized for their academics by receiving the ITA's team academic award and they achieved the highest GPA of all of Florida Tech's athletic programs. Aria Canadell finished the year ranked 67th nationally in singles.

In 2017-18, both of his teams they both would end the year in the ITA rankings coming in at 46, men's team, and 64, women's team.

The men and women were both recognized as 2017 ITA All-Academic Teams, this honor has been award to the men's team for the third year in row. While, it marks the seventh consecutive year for the women’s team and was also the highest GPA of all 22 Florida Tech athletic teams at 3.535. Individually, 16 members earned the the award with many being repeat honorees. 

The honors continued for Macom and his teams as they earned three Sunshine State Conference awards. Aria Canadell, men's First Team Singles, and Alahna Reto, women's, Second Team Singles, were the two individuals honored. While the pairing of Canadell and Ricardo Corona garnered Second Team Doubles, the second All-SSC nod for both in their career.

In addition to coaching both teams at Florida Tech, coach Macom, recently took on the role as the D-II south regions liaison for the newly formed D-II Operations Committee. As a member of the committee he is responsible for overseeing the rules and regulations for D-II tennis with an emphasis on championships and team rankings. 

He also provides his expertise to the tennis community as a member of the ITA South Region Men's Ranking Committee and as the SSC's representative on the NCAA Tennis Coaches Council.

Macom was voted the 2015 United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Florida College Coach of the Year after his men’s and women’s teams finished last spring ranked ninth and 10th in the South region and 37th and 44th in the nation, respectively. The Panther men registered a 13-10 record and 3.2 gpa and the women garnered a 14-10 record and 3.6 gpa. That season also saw him serve on the NCAA Division II Men’s Regional Advisory Committee and the ITA South Region Men’s and Women’s Ranking Committee.

In 2015, Corona was named to the Second Team All-SSC Singles team after he registered a 17-3 singles record in the spring dual season in which he went 4-1 vs. conference opponents as a freshmen. On the women’s side, Macom coached junior Natasa Vukovic to 44th in the nation in singles.

Macom has been recognized for his team’s success, both on the court and with the Aces for Autism program, which he developed. In May 2013, he received his second USPTA College Coach of the Year Award for the Florida Division. He was also chosen as the sectional winner of the 2011 USPTA/ITA Campus and Community Outreach Award for the second time in his career.

He was named the USPTA/Florida-Melbourne District Tennis Professional of the Year in 2009 and the USPTA National College Coach of the Year in 2008. Although he didn’t receive the award, the FIT men’s and women’s tennis teams won the inaugural Champions Cup for their involvement with the CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success)/Life Skills Program in May 2011.

Macom came to Florida Tech from Division I Jacksonville University, where he coached from 1994-2000 under the title of director of men’s and women’s tennis. While at Jacksonville, he became the women’s tennis team’s career victory leader and ranked second on the men’s victory list. Both programs attained national team rankings and numerous student athletes achieved individual academic and athletic honors during his tenure. He also held the position of adjust professor and the coordinator of alumni and parent relations.

He spent several season as a tennis professional in the Tampa area before his arrival to Florida Tech. He became a community leader by volunteering his time with the Rules and Regulations Committee for the USTA Florida League Tennis Council, sitting as the Hillsborough County District Representative for USTA Florida. He was also the local junior team tennis league coordinator for District 11. He was the director of tennis at Hunter’s Green Country Club, a teaching pro at the Harbour Island Athletic Club, the junior tennis coordinator for Northdale Golf and Tennis Club and a head professional for the Tennis Connection. He was also a teaching pro at the Center Court Tennis Club in Chatham, NJ and at Club Med Sandpiper Bay in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Macom was also a USTA Zonal Coach for Team Florida’s 14 and under team in 2007 and 12 and under team in 2014.

His playing experiences include a 2012 ITF ranking of 628 in the men’s 35 and over Division, a 2003 Florida ranking of eight in the men’s 35s, a 2002 Florida ranking of two in the men’s 30 and over division, a 2002 USPTA Florida top five ranking in the men’s open division and a 1999 national ranking of 8 in the men’s 25 and over division. He played collegiately at Jacksonville University in Florida. 

Born and raised in Bay Had and Bridgewater, New Jersey, Macom comes from a large family of tennis players. Both of his parents were tennis enthusiasts and three of his siblings played Division I tennis. His father, Morgan was a nationally ranked player in several age divisions. His brother, John, has produced musical scores for tennis events all over the world.

Macom and his wife, Allie, have three children: Billy, Krystal, and Channen.
