Florida Tech’s Season Ends in NCAA Second Round

Panthers’ rally falls short in 2-1 defeat to Sailfish in West Palm Beach

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (Men's Soccer) –  The Florida Tech men's soccer team (11-5-1) was handed a heart breaking defeat in its NCAA Second Round matchup with Palm Beach Atlantic (13-4-1) on Sunday in West Palm Beach. The Sailfish scored a late winner in the 80th minute, ending a 1-1 tie and putting a close to the Panthers' impressive season.

The Sailfish struck first in the 15th minute on a 20-yard blast by Charlie Dennis, from an assist by Farias Juarez.

Neither team was able to amount a quality attack over the final 30 minutes of action and at the break PBA held a 4-2 edge in shots.  Josh Thomas accounted for the only shot on goal for Florida Tech.

After a back and forth start to the second half, Luca Campanini was able break off from his defender and launch a shot from the top of the box. His attempt was stopped by Elliott Barker but Hugo Lopez found himself in the right place to collect the rebound and fire in the equalizer with 27:18 left in regulation.

PBA regained the lead with just over 10 minutes remaining when Dennis collected a Cameron Roberts pass inside the box and knocked it past Christian Moerch for his second goal of the game.

The Panthers had a chance a tying the ball game with over four minutes left but Barker made back to back saves on blasts by Brandon Smalley and Thomas to preserve his team's lead.

Over the final moments, PBA retained possession on their offensive end and did not give Florida Tech another scoring opportunity as the final seconds ran off the clock and the Panthers' season came to a close.

FIT ended the match with an advantage in shots (11-10), shots on goal (6-4) and corner kicks (3-2). However, it was Barker's four second half saves that were the difference as he helped his team pull out the victory. Moerch finished with two saves in goal for the Panthers.
