MELBOURNE, Fla. (Men's Basketball) – The Florida Tech men's basketball team (1-2) bounced back from a pair of losses to start to the season with a dominant 110-84 victory over Puerto Rico Mayaguez (0-2) in its home opener Monday night at the Clemente Center.
Five Panthers scored in double figures, led by
Sam Daniel's team-high 22 points and six rebounds.
Patrick Anderson guided the offense with a double-double on 16 points and a game-high 12 dimes. Anderson also picked up five steals to lead all players.
Jordan Majors found himself in double-figures for the third game in a row, while
Derek Murphy and
Rafael Casanova added 16 points apiece.
The start of the game saw the Tarzans controlling the pace of play as they held a 21-19 lead at the second media timeout. However, Anderson's trey right out of the stoppage ignited a 15-0 run by the Panthers which they turned into a 43-19 onslaught to close the first half with a 65-40 advantage.
Florida Tech continued its strong shooting in the second half, building its lead to 30 points with 4:33 to go in the contest. With the lead in hand, head coach
Billy Mims took out his starters and let his reserves play out the rest of the game as the Panthers cruised to the 26-point victory.
Overall, Florida Tech shot 50.7 percent from the floor (37-of-73), including 42.4 percent from beyond the arc (14-of-33), and made 22-of-26 at the line. Mayaguez made 49.2 percent of its shots (31-of-63) and won the rebounding battle, 37-36. The Panthers won the turnover battle, 13-22.
