MELBOURNE, Fla. (Men's Basketball) – After the Buccaneers got off to a hot start shooting the long ball in the opening 20 minutes, Florida Tech couldn't catch up with Barry Saturday night at the Clemente Center, falling to No. 16 Barry 96-84.
The Bucs shot 47 percent from distance in the opening half, cooling down to 36.7 percent at the end of the game. Turnovers also proved to be key, although the Panthers only committed seven more turnovers than BU at 18-to-11, the Bucs turned those chances into 34 points compared to just four for the Crimson and Gray.
Sam Daniel and
Jordan Majors spearheaded the FIT effort. Daniel posted 23 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Majors contributed 22 points and seven boards.
Patrick Anderson tallied 15 points, six assists and five rebounds, while
Derek Murphy added 12 points and five boards.
Adrian Gonzalez and Arie Williams torched the Panthers, with Gonzalez throwing up 30 points and Williams chipping in 24. Elvar Fridrksson showed why he's considered one of the premier point guards in the Sunshine State Conference if not the nation, posting 13 points and nine assists.
The Panthers scored the opening bucket of the game but quickly relinquished the lead and fell behind early and never saw the lead again. Matters got worse with 38 seconds left in the half when head coach
Billy Mims received a pair of technical fouls and was ejected from the game.
Entering the half down 15, FIT went on an early second half run to cut the deficit to eight but ultimately it wasn't enough as the Bucs again put some distance between themselves and the Panthers to secure the early season SSC win.
Florida Tech will have a chance to get back in the win column quickly, hosting Puerto Rico-Bayamon Monday at 7 p.m. ET at the Clemente Center. Live video, audio and stats will be available at FloridaTechSports.com/live.
