Panthers Suffer Tough Loss in Allendale

Svensson and Zabian combine to break Lakers shutout streak

ALLENDALE, Mich. (Women's Soccer) – On Wednesday night, Florida Tech (5-4-2) dropped an 8-2 decision to No. 4 Grand Valley State (11-2) at GVSU Soccer Field.

Under the ESPN3 lens, the Lakers quickly netted five goals in the first half to put the game at distance for the Panthers.

Striking first from a distance, redshirt-senior midfielder Elin Svensson put Florida Tech on the scoreboard board after she netted her third goal of the season. Following her example, freshman midfielder Monica Zabian logged her first collegiate score, blasting an impressive long shot that crossed into the back of the Grand Valley net.

With the goals, Florida Tech disrupted the 10-game shutout streak that GVSU have been campaigning since their loss to Columbus State. This is the second time that the Crimson and Gray have halted one of the Lakers streaks, with the first coming in last year's match. In that match, the Panthers downed GVSU 2-1, to hand the Lakers their first loss after a 32-game unbeaten streak that stemmed from 2015.

As a team, FIT notched three shots, two goals, one corner kick and one assist, while redshirt-senior Karlyn Prisco counted six saves in the night outing. Sophomore goalkeeper Natalia Milashus entered for Prisco in the second half and recorded a season-high two saves.

Three minutes into the first period, the Lakers broke through the score with a shot from Gabriella Mencotti that went past Prisco into the far right side of the Panthers net. Seven minutes later, Grand Valley State took its second goal and overlapped the Panthers, 2-0.

Keeping continuous pressure on FIT's back line, a four-minute span would be all it took for GVSU to produce two more goals, marking up the score 4-0. In the remaining 10 minutes of the first half, Svensson came up big for the Panthers. The red-shirt senior out of Billesholm, Sweden dribbled through the Lakers defense, before showing up with a huge right foot from 25 yards out, that sent the ball inches under the crossbar to decrease the Panthers deficit, 4-1.

Continuing their dominance, Grand Valley's high-powered offense answered back one minute after, and grabbed another goal to put FIT at distance, 5-1.

Entering the second half trailing by four, the Lakers offensive tempo seemed to fade, as the Panthers showed a quick presence in the attacking third. However, the Allendale squad soon picked up eight shots, led by Mencotti. The set of shots brought the Lakers fortune once again, as the senior forward Mencotti clutched her 20th goal of the season to move GVSU ahead, 6-1.

Netting once more at the 67-minute mark, the Lakers reached the Panthers end zone to enlarge their stretch, 7-1. Continuing to battle however, Svensson assisted Zabian on thundering shot that came from 40 yards out, which found its way into up the upper-left 90 to decrease the gap, 7-2 with 22 minutes left in regulation.

Capping the outing, Grand Valley went on to score its eighth goal of the night, closing the match, 8-1.

Next up, the Panthers travel to Miami Shores to face SSC rival Barry. The match is set for Saturday, Oct. 13. Teams will square up at 6 p.m. ET.
