McCarthy's Left Foot Seals Win for FIT

Panthers beat Tars after 9 years

MELBOURNE, Fla. (Women's Soccer) - Under perfect playing conditions Wednesday night at Rick Stottler Field, Florida Tech (7-6-2, SSC 4-4-1) broke its nine year losing streak to the Tars (4-9-2, SSC 3-5-2) on a goal that came in the 69 minute of play.

Leading offensively, Keira McCarthy provided the Panthers game-winning goal of the evening, in addition to putting up seven shots and three shots on goal. Behind her, sophomore Maria Munoz hosted an outing that saw nine shots and one shot on goal. Rounding out the offensive leaders, red-shirt senior Elin Svensson provided an additional five shots to the Panthers total.

In between the goal posts, Rockledge-native Karlyn Prisco finished the night with five saves, increasing her 2017 total to 73. After the mid-week outing, the red-shirt senior collected her sixth shutout of the season, climbing to the second spot in the SSC leader board.

Besting the Tars shot total, Florida Tech not only held a dominating 10 shot lead over Rollins, but also recorded a match-high 12 shots in the first period.

At the whistle, Florida Tech showed no hesitation steaming forward, as the Melbourne squad ripped 12 shots towards the Tars end-zone, with junior defender Kelly Johnson nearly scoring twice. At the 35-minute mark, the Panthers forced two back-to-back saves on the Tars goalie in a one-minute span. Despite holding a 5-3 shots on goal edge over Rollins, FIT was unable to complete the momentum and eventually ended the first half tied, 0-0.

Returning from half time, the Panthers started the second period aggressively, counting three shots in the first three minutes of play. With 69 minutes on the board, defender Brianna Heitz crossed the ball into the Tars box, where McCarthy posted a left footer into the left side of the net to put FIT ahead, 1-0. With 20 minutes left in regulation, the Crimson and Gray defense locked the Tars offense, leaving no room for scoring chances. Florida Tech eventually sealed the game, 1-0.

Next up, FIT will hit the road to West Palm Beach for the last regular season SSC match against the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish. The match is set for 6 p.m. ET.
