MELBOURNE, Fla. (Baseball) – Florida Tech (14-11) couldn't take its revenge upon the Sailfish (18-10), as the Panthers drop 7-1 during Tuesday night's game at Andy
Seminick Less-Hall Field.
The Panthers' firepower was tamed by the Palm Beach Atlantic mound, as FIT recorded solely four hits. Seniors Reed Neal and
David Wilson recorded two hits apiece. Wilson was the author of the only Panthers run, as the left fielder blasted a solo homerun to the deep left center.
The Crimson and Gray set the pace for PBA, with Neal shooting a double down the right center. John
Sternagel was then safe at first upon a fielder choice, while Grant
McKown followed up with a walk. The two seniors tried to place themselves in scoring position after simultaneously stealing second and third on a swing by Ryan
Sinzenich, butÂ
Sternagel and
McKown were left to hang as FIT closed the bottom of the first without batting in its runners.
In the top of the second, the Sailfish took the lead grabbing two runs. With a 2-0 deficit, it did not take long for Florida Tech to roar back and reduce the gap. With empty bases, Wilson stepped to the plate and drove a homer behind the left center fence.
Both dugouts went blank in the third, but PBA rushed to increase its margin on the Panthers, as they picked up another run in the top of the fourth. Next went another scoreless fifth and sixth inning for both line-ups, although the Panthers threatened to shorten the distance after Wilson flared a double to the left field. However, the West Coast outfielder remained stranded on the second base bag.Â
In the seventh, the Sailfish bats broke through pulling together three more runs, as they overlapped the Crimson and Gray, 6-1. The Panthers kept fighting, when Neal reached base on a single up the middle. Despite the walk allotted to
McKown, the Florida Tech lineup could not allow its runners to cross home.
In the ninth, the Sailfish brought in one more run, increasing their lead. Despite the offensive efforts, Florida Tech ended the bottom half with two runners left on base, and eventually fell to PBA, 7-1.
Due up, the Panthers await No. 10 Lynn University at home for a SSC weekend series at Andy
Seminick Les-Hall field. Dugouts will line up for Game 1 of the series at 6 p.m. ET. Fans can access more info and live coverage at FloridaTechSports.com/live.
