Panthers Duel with Tars Ends in Loss

Eight hits not enough to clinch Game 2

MELBOURNE, Fla. (Baseball) - In week 13 of the 2017 season, the Florida Tech Panthers (26-17, SSC 10-7) winning streak was interjected by next-door rival Rollins College, as the Panthers were topped by the Tars in Game 2 of the SSC series, 8-2.

The Panthers created momentum in multiple portions of the game, but was ultimately found themselves unable to bring in runners to clinch the productive fragments. At the plate, the Crimson and Gray collected eight hits for two runs. Reid Neal roared in the box, as the senior ended this afternoon's contest going 3-for-5 with one double. Fellow seniors Grant McKown and Nick Capra collected one hit and one RBI apiece.

The game started with a quick 1-2-3 offensive outing for both lineups, but in the second, the Panthers opened up the dances when McKown was granted a free base with bases loaded, consequently moving the runners around to bring in the first FIT run.

Florida Tech kept grinding, and in the third the Crimson and Gray placed one more run on the board, due to a Tars uncertainty that allowed John Sternagel to reach base. The Rockledge naive eventually crossed home plate on a single to the right side by Capra that put the Panthers ahead 2-0.

However, the Tars rallied back in the fourth and took the lead, snatching three runs against the FIT defense. In the home offensive half, FIT engaged in a battle to reduce the gap, as Neal and McKown combined for back-to-back singles to open up the frame. However, the two corners were left hanging, leaving the inning half-scoreless.

Entering the fifth with a one-run lead, Rollins enlarged its margins after tacking two more runs on the board. After two blank frames, the Tars reached the scoreboard once more with three runs to increase their stretch, 8-2.

The Florida Tech lineup continued to battle battling throughout the remainder, trying once again in their very last at bats. Given great efforts, the Crimson and Gray were unable to make the comeback, falling, 8-2.
