Panthers Clutch First Win over ASU Rams

Munoz and Prisco combine in FIT victory

Commerce, TX (Women's Soccer) - Florida Tech (1-1) took its first win of the season on the road Sunday, defeating the Angelo State Rams (1-1). During the outing, sophomore Maria Munoz tallied her first seasonal goal, while Karlyn Prisco clutched her first shutout to give the Panthers the 1-0 victory.

"Today the team stepped up and put together a great team effort" said Florida Tech head coach Dustin Smith. "We started off the game well and created multiple scoring opportunities, but Angelo's goal keeper thwarted some solid attempts, so we missed on several occasions. Fortunately, we did not go down by one albeit against the run of play on an offside call. We faced a late surge by ASU that we were able to sustain. It was fantastic to get our first win on the young season, especially on the road, but our schedule does not get any easier moving forward."

The Panthers made sure to capitalize early, as senior forward Keira McCarthy assisted Munoz to put the Crimson and Gray ahead at the 32-minute mark in the first period.

Continuing its stronghold into the second half, FIT pressed the Rams defense as Elin Svensonn, Munoz and Kelley Johnson each took one shot within a minute of play. During the second period, the Rams attempted three shots, but Rockledge native Prisco blocked two as the third went wide.

Munoz ended the outing with four shots, two on goal, while senior midfielder Svensson accumulated 10 shots, four on goal.

As a team, Florida Tech counted 15 shots, one save and three corner kicks to cap the 1-0 victory over the Rams.

FIT hits the road again on Friday, Sep. 8, when they travel to Georgia to face Young Harris at 7 p.m. ET.
