Panthers take Mountain Lions in Overtime

Florida Tech advances to 2-1 with win over Young Harris

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. (Women's Soccer) – Florida Tech (2-1) snatched another win on the road, topping the Young Harris Mountain Lions (1-2) at the YHC Soccer Field on Friday night.  After tying the game in the second half, the Panthers fastened the win within three minutes of overtime play.

Junior forward Keira McCarthy and redshirt-junior midfielder Taylor Eller were the protagonists of the Crimson and Gray goals. During the second period, McCarthy put FIT back on track with a 1-on-1 goal against the Young Harris goalie, while in overtime, Eller scored on a deflection that went into the left side of the net.

Both goals marked the first seasonal score for each Panther player. In 2016, McCarthy placed first within the Sunshine State Conference leader board for game winning goals (5), and finished in third for goals with nine. Fellow teammate Eller collected two game-winning goals, clutching the 15 spot in the SSC.

"What a great game tonight" Head Coach Dustin Smith said. "The girls fought hard against a well organized Young Harris team. It was a total team effort this evening, however Taylor Eller who scored the game winner was outstanding the entire game and was the difference for us. I'm so proud of these girls for overcoming a 1-0 deficit on the road, especially with the distractions coming from Hurricane Irma."

In the first half of the game, Florida Tech attacked the Mountain Lions defense by delivering six shots, two of which were from senior midfielder Elin Svensson. Entering the second period with a bare scoreboard, the Mountain Lions reached the FIT net to take the lead, 1-0.

Thirty seconds after the YHC goal Florida Tech answered back, clawing the tying goal with a joint effort by McCarthy and Munoz. After erasing the gap, Florida Tech took four more shots against the Young Harris goal area but was unable to clutch another goal.

As the game rolled into overtime, the Crimson and Gray quickly wrapped up the match on a corner kick by Brie Heitz that was deflected into the net by Eller.

As a team, FIT accumulated 17 shots, three corner kicks, and four saves that came from Karlyn Prisco, who bumped her total up to 12 during the 2017 season.

Next up, the Panthers will travel to Dahlonega, Ga. on Sunday to face the North Georgia Nighthawks at 1 p.m. ET.
