SAN ANGELO, Texas - It was a bitter sweet day for Florida Tech (3-4), as the Panthers fell 3-0 to No. 2 Angelo State (9-1) and clutched a 6-5 win over Texas A&M-International (2-8) in an extra-inning thriller at Mayer Field on Saturday night.
In the circle, freshman Alaina Perry (1-0) sealed her first collegiate win, closing the final 2.1 innings against the Dust Devils.
At the plate, Jessica Callahan led the Crimson and Gray offense with a 3-for-7 performance in the box, driving in two RBI. Senior Makayla Palmer and freshman Victoria Szrom recorded one double apiece, with Szrom batting in two RBI in the win over Texas A&M-International.
In the first game, the Rams reached the scoreboard first after two blank innings from both dugouts. However, ASU went the distance in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead. For the remainder of the game, FIT collected solely two hits, and eventually dropped to the Rams, 3-0.
Moving into the second game, Florida Tech had a slow start, as the Dust Devils broke through the score first in the top of the third to move past the Panthers, 1-0. From there, FIT remained scoreless until the seventh, where Rebecca Wilson flared a single to center field to tie the game, 1-1.
As the teams entered the first extra inning, Texas A&M-International quickly loaded the bases and pushed in four runs to regain the lead, 5-1. However, the Panthers roared back with an impressive offensive half.
The inning started with Callahan batting in two runners with bases loaded, and Szrom following up with two more runs to tie things up, 5-5. With runners at first and third, sophomore Vanessa Rubio stepped to the plate and doubled down left center to bring home the winning run and seal the win for Florida Tech, 6-5.
Tomorrow, FIT will cap off the McCorkle Challenge in a contest against the Dust Devils at 2:30 p.m. CT.
