Two-Run Double Pushes Panthers Past Texas A&M International

Carver lifts FIT in third inning

SAN ANGELO, Texas - Ending Week 2 of the 2018 season, Florida Tech (4-4) capped off the ASU George McCorkle Challenge in thrilling fashion, as the Panthers defeated Texas A&M International (2-9) 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Mayer Field.

In the box, sophomore Ally Carver went 1-for-3 and drove in the winning runs for FIT with her first double of the year. Also recording hits, Victoria Szrom, Xiarysse Emerenciana, Vanessa Rubio and Mikayla Wessel tallied one apiece.

In the circle, junior Melanie Murphy (2-2) held the Dust Devils lineup to six total hits for and only allowed them to score one run. The Melbourne native also struck out eight of the 28 batters faced, tallying a 1.4 ERA.

As a team, Florida Tech accumulated five hits for a .200 batting average.

The Dust Devils opened up the game in the second, as the Laredo lineup pushed in one runner to take the lead 1-0. However, the Panthers came back in the top of the third, where Emerenciana brought FIT on base with a single to right field. From there, Wessel allotted a free base that put runners on first and second, until Carver flared a double down the right field line to allow her fellow teammates to cross home plate and overlap TAMIU, 2-1.

In the remaining innings, Murphy and the Panthers defense controlled the game, as the Dust Devil lineup went scoreless for a final score of 2-1.

Next, Florida Tech will return home to host the 2018 Florida Tech Softball Classic. The tournament will start on Friday, Feb. 16 with FIT facing St. Mary's University at 10 a.m. ET.
