Last Second Shot Sends Panthers to Fourth Straight Defeat

Florida Tech falls to Saint Leo 74-72 after Lions hit jumper with 10 seconds remaining

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Florida Tech men's basketball team was dealt a disappointing loss against Sunshine State Conference foe Saint Leo on Saturday, as the Lions came back from a double-digit second half deficit and won on a jumper with 10 seconds remaining to shock the Panthers, 74-72, at the Clemente Center.

The result extends FIT's (10-12, 5-9 SSC) current losing streak to four games while the Lions (12-14, 8-7 SSC) picked up their third victory in a row.

Jordan Majors paced four Panthers in double-figures with 22 points to go along with four rebounds, four steals and three assists. Patrick Anderson scored 17 points, while Valur Valsson finished with 13 points and six assists. Sam Daniel registered a season-low 10 points in addition to five rebounds.

The Panthers shot 50.9 percent in the game compared to 49.2 percent by SLU. Both teams knocked down 12 three-pointers. The Lions outrebounded FIT, 37-22, and recorded more points in the paint, 32-26.

The teams exchanged buckets over the first nine minutes of the game with neither gaining more than a four-point advantage. A 6-0 spurt gave the Lions their largest lead of the game at 20-15 with 9:47 to go in the first half.

The Panthers answered with a 10-0 run to grab a five-point edge, 25-20, at the 7:06 mark. The Crimson and Gray led the remainder of the half, increasing its advantage to as much as seven points, 39-32, before eventually taking a 39-36 lead into the halftime break.

Valsson's layup with 15:53 remaining in the second half capped off a 13-5 run that gave the Panthers their first double-digit lead of the game, 52-41. FIT's advantage reached 12 points, 67-55, on a three by Anderson with 8:44 to go.

Since Anderson's basket, the Panthers made just two field goals the rest of the game and opened up the door for SLU to get back into the game. The Lions scored eight straight points to cut their deficit to four points, 67-63, with just over seven minutes to go.

Nieja Jordan's only points of the game, a jumper in the paint off a pass from Majors, pushed FIT's lead back to six with less than six minutes to go. SLU answered with another run and tied the game up at 69-69 with 3:19 left on the clock.

Majors converted a three-point play to give the Panthers a 72-69 but those would be the final points of the game for the home squad. A three by the Lions' Daniel Duarte, his sixth of the game, tied the contest at 72-72 with one minute remaining.

Daniel had a chance to give FIT the lead with 34 seconds on the clock but his offering rimmed out and Saint Leo gained possession of the rebound. Kyran McClure hit a jumper with 11 seconds to go to put the Lions ahead, 74-72, their first lead since the 9:25 mark of the first half.

The Panthers had a chance to tie or win the game in the final seconds but attempts by Majors and Coil bounced off the rim and FIT was defeated at home for the seventh time this season.

Florida Tech will look to get back on track when the Panthers travel to Tampa on Wednesday, Feb. 7, for a showdown with the Spartans at 7:30 p.m. ET at the Bob Martinez Center. Fans can access links to live coverage at FloridaTechSports.com.
