MELBOURNE, Fla. - On Thursday afternoon, Florida Tech (12-11) extended its winning streak after downing Tiffin University (6-9) in thrilling fashion at the Nancy
Bottge Field. After defeating the Dragons 3-1 in Game 1, the Panthers sealed their fifth consecutive victory with a 1-0 decision over the Ohio squad.
In the circle, Amanda Khan (2-2) collected her second consecutive shutout, as the senior held Tiffin scoreless for seven consecutive innings with one strikeout, while solely allowing three hits for an outstanding 0.00 ERA.
Earning her fourth victory in Game 1, McKenzie
Krutsinger (4-3) allowed three hits and struck out two in four innings.
Sealing the first win of the day,
Melanie Murphy (3-5) tabbed her first save of the season, as the junior amassed four strikeouts in three innings pitched. After today's performance, Murphy places eighth on the SSC
leaderboard with an impressive 1.65 ERA.
Cumulatively, the Florida Tech pitching staff holds a 1.90 ERA, which sits third best inside the conference.
In the box, sophomore
Vanessa Rubio led the Crimson and Gray lineup with a .500 batting average, as the Lake Worth native recorded a 3-for-6 performance at the plate, which included the winning double in Game 2. Among the SSC leaders, Rubio is tied for second with eight doubles and carries a .446 slugging average.
Pitching in with a .400 batting average, fellow sophomore
Ally Carver went 2-for-5 in both outings, while junior
Xiarysse Emerenciana recorded a .286 batting average with one triple, one inside-the-park home run, and two RBI. With today's triple,
Emerenciana now takes third for triples inside the conference with three.
During Game 1, the Panthers broke through the score in the bottom of the first, as
Emerenciana and
Wessel joined forces to put FIT ahead, 1-0. However, Tiffin quickly rallied back in the top of the fourth and tied the score, 1-1.
In the home offensive half of the fourth,
Emerenciana turned the game around with an inside-the-park homer that regained the lead for Florida Tech, 3-1. For the remainder of the game, both dugouts remained scoreless to close first contest, 3-1.
Forwarding to Game 2, Khan and Tiffin's pitcher
Kimmy Reynolds dominated the entire game. After four consecutive blank frames, Florida Tech posted its only run in the bottom of the fourth on a double by Rubio, 1-0. In the final three innings, Khan forced nine consecutive putouts to wrap up the FIT win, 1-0.
Tomorrow, Florida Tech will return to conference play and host the Embry-Riddle Eagles at 2 p.m. ET.
