LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Tech looked to upset No. 9 Florida Southern in today's doubleheader, but it's bid fell short after the Moccasins grabbed consecutive wins in both Game 1 (6-3) and Game 2 (4-1) respectively.
Â
Hitting his
11th home run of the season, Jacob
Buser added another tally to his 2018 total during Game 1 of the series doubleheader. The Staten Island native now ties for fifth in the conference standings for home runs and sits six off of the leader (17). Additionally, the FIT power hitter continues to secure the second spot inside the conference standings for RBI (47) and maintains his reign atop the conference
leaderboard for doubles with 18.
Â
On the mound in Game 2, senior An
Drew Beyer (3-4) compiled five strikeouts in six complete innings pitched to increase his total to 46 on the year.
In Game 1 of the twin bill, both lineups struggled to place runners on base for the first two innings, until the
Mocs burst in the bottom of the third with two runs. Forwarding to the top of the fifth,Â
Buser erased the Panthers deficit with a two-run shot behind the right field fence to tie things up, 2-2. However, the
Mocs quickly broke the balance in the sixth, where they posted one more run to regain the lead, 3-2.
In the following two innings, Florida Southern managed to enlarged its stretch by three, putting the game out of reach for the Panthers, 6-2. Scoring once more in the final frame, Florida Tech managed to push across one more run on a fielder's choice, making it a three-point decision for the Crimson and Gray.
During Game 2, the Lakeland lineup set the pace once again, breaking through the score in the bottom of the second to move past FIT, 1-0. Entering the top of the third trailing by one, Florida Tech managed to balance the score at one with a hard grounder to third that allowed Newton to cross home plate safe. However, in the bottom of the fourth, the NCAA Top-10 lineup struck again, snatching one more to move past Florida Tech, 2-1.
After a scoreless fifth inning, the
Mocs doubled their score in the bottom of the sixth,
where they pushed across two more runners to increase their lead, 4-1.
For the remainder of the game, Florida Tech struggled to move its runners, and eventually dropped to FSC, 4-1.
Next, Florida Tech will return home to host Saint Leo for a conference series starting on Friday, Apr. 20 at 6 p.m. ET.
