MELBOURNE, Fla. – After three straight matches on the road, Florida Tech women's soccer finally returned to a friendly environment. The home cooking was exactly what the team needed as they dropped Saint Leo, 3-0.
The first half was a feeling out process for the two squads as they employed a bend don't break defensive mentality as they traded shots but only a total of five were on goal. The Lions did hold the slight advantage with seven shots and three on goal compared to the Panthers five shots and two on goal.
The second half started out much the same as the first till a well-timed substitution for a fresh
Kelley Johnson in the 61
st minute paid dividends less than two minutes later. Johnson with an assist from
Keira McCarthy powered one pass the keeper to break the scoreless deadlock.
The two would switch places only three minutes later as McCarthy scored off a Johnson assist to put Florida Tech ahead 2-0. In the 81
st minute, Johnson found the back of the net again to tack on the insurance goal for the team. This finalized the score on the evening at 3-0.
The Crimson and Gray will look to build on this momentum on Wednesday, Sept. 29, as they face Florida Southern. This match is set to start at 7 p.m. on Rick Stottler Field.
