MANKATO, Minn. - The Panthers continued to rack up the frequent flyer miles as the team packed up and headed off to Mankato, Minnesota for the final leg of its three match road trip. Florida Tech (0-2-1) looked poised to upset No. 13 Minnesota State - Mankato (2-0-0) but saw their plans derailed in the 89th minute as a late score gave the Mavericks the win at 3-2.
The first half of action was a back and forth affair as neither team could seemingly hold onto momentum for more than a few moments. This was due in large part to the pressure being applied at the attacking end by both teams as they traded shots from the opening whistle till half time.
However, only one of the 25 combined first-half shots found the back of the net and that took place in the 41st minute when Florida Tech's
Veronica Thordardottir buried a beautiful volley off of a
Maria Munoz cross.
This lead would not last very long as the Mavericks tied the score at 1-1 less than two minutes into the start of the second half. The Panthers did regain the lead in the 55th minute when
Elisabeth Stoffel tapped in a second chance effort.Â
But an unfortunate shift in momentum Mankato netted two goals in the final 30 minutes in which pushed them past Florida Tech, 3-2.
The Panthers will look to earn their first victory of the young season when they finally return home to the familiar confines of Rick Stottler Field to face off against Delta State. Kick off for the match is set for Friday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m.
