Florida Tech’s Upset Bid Falls Short in Loss to No. 21 Lynn

Panthers' game-winning shot blocked in finals seconds as Tech falls to Lynn, 59-57, on the road

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Tech was in a position to knock off No. 21 Lynn on the road Saturday but Trey Schaneville's potential game-winning layup was blocked in the final seconds, and the Panthers fell, 59-57, in SSC action at the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center.

The Crimson & Gray have now lost three in a row since defeating No. 7 Florida Southern on Jan. 2.

The Panthers drop to 1-6 in conference play and 0-3 in road games this season. Lynn improves to 6-1 in league action and 10-0 on its home court.

Struggles at the charity stripe were a main factor in the defeat as Tech went 13-of-20 on free throws. Derek Murphy accounted for nine of his team's 13 made free throws.

Murphy finished with a game-high 21 points and four rebounds. Schaneville scored a career-high 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting with eight rebounds and two assists. Mate Papai ended with nine rebounds and seven assists.

The Fighting Knights got off to a hot start and jumped out to an early 15-point lead, 18-3, after a fast-break layup by Jamal Palmer with 14:29 to go in the first half.

The Panthers fought their way back with a 9-0 run, cutting the deficit to 18-12 following a three-point play by Murphy at the 11:10 mark.

A trey by Palmer, with 6:13 to go in the first half, increased Lynn's advantage back to a dozen, 28-16. However, Schaneville quickly responded with his second triple to make it a nine-point game. Murphy then trimmed the margin to 28-22 on his layup with 3:25 left on the clock.

It looked as though Tech would go into halftime trailing by eight following a pair of free throws by Murphy, which made the score 33-25 with three seconds left in the first half.

However, a late foul by Coil with 0.8 left on the clock resulted in two more free throws for Lynn and the Panthers went into halftime trailing by ten, 35-25.

After Lynn pushed their lead to 12 early in the second half, the Panthers ensued on a 13-5 run and capped it with a thunderous dunk by Nieja Jordan to make the score 42-38 with 12:09 remaining.

The Fighting Knights responded with their own run and corralled a 53-41 advantage with 7:15 left on the clock.

Facing a double-digit deficit with less than five minutes to go, the Panthers proceeded to outscore Lynn, 11-1, over the next four minutes and trimmed their deficit to just one, 58-57, with 39 seconds remaining.

After the Fighting Knights missed a layup on their next possession, Schaneville grabbed the rebound with 10 seconds left and sprinted down the court. The freshman beat his defender to the paint and had a chance to give Tech the win, but his shot was blocked with 1.8 seconds left and Lynn held on for its third straight win over the Panthers.

Florida Tech ended the game shooting 40 percent (20-of-50) from the field and 4-of-18 (.222) beyond the arc. Lynn finished 20-of-55 (.364) in the shooting department while making 29 percent (7-of-24) from three-point range.

The Panthers won the rebounding battle, 35-33, and closed the game with an edge in second-chance points, 15-10, bench points, 26-7, and points in the paint, 28-22.

Florida Tech will look to get back in the win column next time out as the Panthers host SSC foe Embry-Riddle on Wednesday, Jan. 16. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Clemente Center.
