MELBOURNE, Fla. – Panthers' women's basketball opened Day One of the Florida Tech Classic in dominant fashion as they defeated the University of Puerto Rico – Bayamon, 80-56.
Amanda Allen was a force for the Crimson and Gray as she had a game-high in both points (21) and rebounds (5).
Fanny Hakanson has continued to dazzle the crowd with her passing ability as she had a game-high eight assists.
Florida Tech came out the gates hot as they outscored Bayamon 15-2 over the first 6:12. A slight run by the Vaqueros made it 15-6 with about 2:49 left in the first quarter. The teams then traded baskets to end the period at 21-11.
The second quarter was a back-and-forth affair as neither team really gained the upper hand for long but at the buzzer, the Panthers did manage to have a 19-16 advantage in the period. This put the score at 40-27 as the teams went into the locker room.
The second half started just as the first half ended as neither team took control of the action till Florida Tech went on a seven-point run halfway through the third. However, Bayamon answered right back with a seven-point streak of their own and pushed the total to 56-44. But this did not deter the Panthers as they ended the quarter with another 7-0 run and the game went into the final quarter with a score of 63-44.
The final 10 minutes started out slow as no shots were made in the first two minutes. But that changed in a flash as Bayamon went on a 6-2 run over the next couple of minutes and then a huge 9-0 run by the Panthers put the game on ice as they led 74-50 with only 3:26 left on the clock. The final few minutes saw Florida Tech put it in cruise control and this led to a score of 80-56 when time expired.
Tech will look to push its win streak to three straight when they play Clayton State Saturday, Nov. 16, at noon ET. This game will conclude the team's play in this year's Florida Tech Classic.
