Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Florida Tech Defeated in Season Opener

TAMPA, Fla. – Florida Tech women's basketball tipped off their season with a trip to the Bob Martinez Athletics Center for the Spartan Crossover. The Panthers opponent was the West Georgia Wolves and these two teams battled from opening tip to the final buzzer. At that final buzzer, the Panthers were not the victors as they were defeated by UWG, 67-75.

Senior Aniquah Swan had a career game as she tallied a career-high 22 points. November Morton was the only other Panther with double-digit points as the Floridian had 13. Fanny Hakanson was a maestro with the ball in her hand as she dished out 10 assists.

Defensively, Severine Uggen was Tech's top rebounder with six while both Amanda Allen and Gudlaug Juliusdottir managed to grab five. Four Panthers were able to swipe multiple balls while three recorded a block.

Florida Tech did not start the contest off strong as they found themselves behind the Wolves, 19-6, only 5:17 in the first quarter. A double-digit deficit persisted for a majority of the final minutes of the first and the score was 17-27 at the teams went to the benches.

However, the Panthers came out on fire in the second quarter as they went on a 15-4 run, which included an 11-0 streak, over the first five minutes of the period. This brought the Panthers within one possession as the score was 30-31. However, West Georgia went on a slight run and then the teams traded baskets to end the first half as the score was 34-39.

The third quarter continued the trend that ended the first half as the team went bucket for bucket with each other. However, the Crimson and Gray did grab their first and only lead of the contest, 53-52, with 1:51 left on the clock. Unfortunately, the Wolves went on a five-point run to end the quarter which put the Panthers down 53-57 as the game headed into the final 10 minutes of action.

The final quarter of play was much like the third as neither team could manage to take over the contest as the longest run by either team was four points over the entire period. This sadly meant that Tech could not manage to complete the comeback as the women fell to the Wolves, 67-75.

Florida Tech will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 9, when the women take the court against Spring Hill in the second and final game of the Spartan Crossover. This contest is set to begin at 4 p.m. ET in the Bob Martinez Athletic Center.
