Tech Ousted by Barry on the Road

Panthers fall to 1-3 in SSC play following 92-72 loss to Bucs

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Florida Tech could not overcome a disappointing shooting night against conference foe Barry on Monday and fell 92-72 at the Health & Sports Center.

The Panthers looked like a squad drained after just coming off a stressful exam week as they suffered their worst shooting performance of the season. Tech hit just 28-of-76 shots on the evening for 36.8%, which includes making 7-of-31 (22.6%) beyond the arc.

Trey Schaneville recorded a career-high 17 points to lead all players in the game. Derek Murphy added 14 points and five rebounds while Sesan Russell finished with 13 points and seven assists.

It was a rough shooting game for both teams to start the contest as Tech and Barry combined to go 4-of-20 from the field over the first five minutes of play. The Bucs led 6-4 at that point.

A 10-2 run by Barry increased its advantage to double-digits, 16-6, with 11:45 to go in the first half. The Panthers were able to claw their way back and trim the margin to 20-14 on a lay-in by Russell with 8:04 left on the clock.

However, the Bucs took over from there and ensued on a 21-9 run to grab a 41-23 lead with 43 seconds remaining in the half. Tech closed the period with consecutive layups by Russell and Antonis Pefanis and went into halftime with a 14-point deficit, 41-27.

The Panthers got off to a great start right out of the break as Pefanis and Russell each knocked down from long-range, and Mate Papai touched in a layup, to help cut their deficit to 46-37 with 18:11 to go.

Although, the Bucs did regroup and began to stretch their lead and put the game out of reach from Florida Tech. With just under 10 minutes remaining in the second half, Barry had a 68-47 edge over the Panthers.

BU's advantage reached as high as 25 points, 84-59, with 3:52 left on the clock. However, great shooting by Schaneville at the end helped bring down Tech's deficit to 20 before the final buzzer.

With the loss, the Panthers drop to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in SSC play. Barry moves to 7-2 and 3-1 against conference opponents.

The Bucs won the rebounding battle 45-41 and finished with an edge in second-chance points, 20-19, points off turnovers, 20-13, bench points, 52-30 and fast break points, 18-4. Barry also controlled the paint, outscoring Tech 48-38.
