Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Florida Tech Comeback Attempt Falls Short Against Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Florida Tech women's basketball looked to end its two game skid as the team went to Winter Park to take on the Rollins Tars. Sadly the losing streak moved to three straight as the Panthers were beaten, 49-61.

Aniquah Swan had a standout performance as the senior posted a team high in both points with 12 and rebounds with six. Fanny Hakanson continued her masterful season as she tacked on six more assists. This puts her total at 112, which gives her about a 40-assist lead over the next highest Sunshine State Conference player and moves her to third place in the country.

The first quarter was extremely tight as both teams managed to grab the momentum at various points. Gudlaug Juliusdottir opened the game's scoring as she drained a jumper about 20 seconds into the game. The Tars then scored the next four points but a 5-0 Panther run gave them a 7-4 lead. A Rollins' 9-0 streak followed and pushed the score to 13-7 but Juliusdottir tallied four straight points to close the quarter and this made it 11-13 after the first 10 minutes.

The second quarter was similar to the first as neither team could hold on to control for more than a few minutes at a time. However, a couple of extra scoring bursts for the Tars as they outscored the Crimson & Gray 17-22. This made it a 28-35 ballgame at the halftime buzzer.

The third quarter was all Tech as the team came out firing on all cylinders. A quick 9-2 run opened the third quarter and brought the game even at 37-37 with 6:28 left in the period. After this run, the women cooled down some as the two teams began to trade buckets till the end of the quarter.

It was a 42-44 game as the final quarter of play began and the first minute of action seemed it was about to pick up how the third period ended. Unfortunately, an eight-point Tars' run made it a 10-point game with 5:25 left to go. Florida Tech managed to bring it back within two possessions but as time counted to tick off the clock and a late-game Rollins surge stopped the comeback attempt, as the Panthers were defeated, 49-61.

Florida Tech will be back in familiar surroundings Saturday, Jan. 25 when the team hosts Saint Leo at 2 p.m. ET.
