MELBOURNE, Fla. – Florida Tech was unable to get much offensive momentum going against No. 11 Mercy College on Wednesday and the 25th ranked Panthers fell to the Mavericks 10-3 at Panther Stadium.
The loss is the second of the season for the Crimson & Gray. Both of Tech's losses in 2020 have come against top-15 teams. The Panthers are now 1-2 against ranked opponents this season including last week's upset victory over No. 5 Regis.
Alexis Townsend was the lone goal scorer for Florida Tech and finished with a hat trick and two draw controls.
Aleah Fjelstad and
Mollie Kaplan each distributed an assist and a few ground balls to the Panthers' effort.
Brooke Albert,
Olivia Going and
Kailee O'Brien collected three ground balls and two caused turnovers apiece.
Madison Fields and
Madison Ulvenes each recorded two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Fields made eight saves in the game while playing all 60 minutes in the Panthers' net.
Mercy outshot Tech (24-14) in the contest and collected more draw controls (8-6) and more caused turnovers (14-13). Both teams finished the game with 25 ground balls.
The Mavericks led 2-0 with 19:22 left in the first half. Townsend finally got Tech on the board with 10:45 remaining before halftime off an assist from Fjelstad.
It took just 19 seconds for Mercy to push their lead to 3-1. The Mavericks then tallied three more goals before the end of the half and took a 6-1 advantage over the Panthers into the break.
Townsend cut the deficit to 6-2 on a free position goal less than a minute into the second half.
Mercy scored consecutive goals to increase its lead to 8-2 with 12:11 to go in regulation. Townsend then completed her hat trick off an assist from Kaplan with 9:23 left to make the score 8-3.
However, from there the Mavericks closed the door on the Panthers, netting two more goals to seal their road win.
Florida Tech is back in action this Saturday, Mar. 14, hosting Notre Dame College in the Panthers' Senior Day Game at 3 p.m. at Panther Stadium.
The Senior Day ceremony will begin prior to the start of the contest and will honor six seniors playing in their final season for the Panthers,
Madison Fields,
Aleah Fjelstad,
Olivia Going,
Mollie Kaplan,
Alexis Townsend and
Chloe Zador.
