Panthers Knock Out Choctaws in PKs to Advance to NCAA Second Round

Florida Tech defeats Mississippi College 4-1 in penalty kicks to move on to face Lee in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

STATS OF THE MATCH: 
  • It was a back-and-forth game throughout as neither team was able to get a clear advantage in the 90 minutes of regulation. 
  • MC had a 4-2 shot advantage at halftime while Tech earned more corners 2-1.
  • Pace of play picked up after halftime as both teams tallied 9 shots and 2 corner kicks apiece. Tech had a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal in the second half. 
  • MC outshot Tech 4-0 in the two overtime periods but wasn't able to get one passed Maria Sanchez Recuero, who had 3 saves in extra time and finished with a season-high 8 saves. 
  • Mayara Queiroz Reis scored on the Panthers' first penalty kick and Sanchez Recuero stopped the first MC take to put Tech up 1-0 after the first round. 
  • Vilma Ferdfelt made her PK attempt and Kaylee Foster scored for MC and Tech led 2-1 after the second round of PKs.
  • Emily Swope netted her PK and Julia Murdoch missed wide right and the Panthers took a 3-1 edge after the third round.
  • With a chance to send her team on to the second round of the tournament, Veronica Thordardottir scored her PK to seal the victory and the Panthers charged the field in celebration with their teammates.

COACHES CORNER:
"We are very happy to be going through to the second round," said head coach Ryan Moon. "We played very maturely today and managed different periods of the game really well. Mississippi College was a tough test and I'm proud of the girls for stepping up. We are looking forward to taking our energy into Sunday where we will be ready again to give our all."

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • This marks Florida Tech's first NCAA Tournament win since 2013 when the Panthers defeated Valdosta 1-0. 
  • Panthers have now won five NCAA Tournament games in penalty kicks. The most recent tournament win in PKs was 5-4 over Lenoir-Rhyne in the 2010 NCAA Quarterfinal to advance to the team's only Final Four appearance. 
  • Ryan Moon becomes the second Panther head coach to earn a NCAA Tournament victory in program history, joining hall of fame coach Fidgi Haig.
  • Tech earns its 11th clean sheet of the season while Recuero picks up her 10th clean sheet.

UP NEXT: Florida Tech advances the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament where it will face South Region No. 1 seed Lee on Sunday, Nov. 21. The contest will begin at 2 p.m. ET at Lee Soccer Field in Cleveland, Tenn.
