TAMPA, Fla. – After an almost two-week hiatus, Florida Tech softball took the field for competition, this time heading across the state for a matchup with Tampa. The Panthers lost 2-0 after lightning shortens the contest to five innings.
Cheyenne Nelson kept her hot streak alive as she went 2-3 and defensively had two putouts.
Victoria Szrom and
Mikayla Lewin were the other members of the Crimson & Gray that tallied a hit.
Jordan Lawlis (2-1) got the start as she pitched five innings and allowed only two runs on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Florida Tech opened the game strong as they had the bases loaded with no outs after a Nelson single and two straight walks. Unfortunately, the Spartans worked their way out of the jam and the score was 0-0 as the game reached the middle of the first.
This 0-0 tie stood until the bottom of the third inning when two separate Tech throwing errors helped UT bring two runners across the bag and made it 2-0.
This 2-0 score kept up until the top of the sixth inning was set to begin and then the lightning capital of the United States lived up to its name and lightning cut the contest short.
The teams finish the rest of the Sunshine State Conference series Saturday, March 20. This doubleheader starts at 2:30 p.m. ET and takes place at Nancy Bottge Field.
