MELBOURNE, Fla. – After lightning cut their first doubleheader against the Tampa Spartans short, Florida Tech was back at it with the final two games of the SSC series. Tech gave it their all but sadly they fell in both games of the doubleheader, 9-2 and 6-1.
Victoria Szrom and
Chloe French both had outstanding days as they each went 4-6. French added on to her day with one home run, one run and a RBI.
Mikayla Wessel was the other Panther to get multiple hits as she went 2-5 with one run and a walk.
Four Panthers' got time in the circle with
Samantha Guider getting the most work with seven innings pitched. During this time she allowed five runs, three earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts.
Florida Tech struck first as Wessel stole home off a dropped third strike that forced the Spartans to throw
Tina Velazquez Rolon out at first. This was the only run for the next few frames until the top of the third when Tampa singled up the middle that scored two.
In their next time at the plate, Tampa broke it open as they had seven cross the bag, which made it a 9-1 contest. However, this did not deter the Crimson & Gray as they kept fighting and in the bottom of the fifth,
Mikayla Lewin got the second run of the contest off a slow grounder by
Whitney Ellis. Unfortunately, this was the last run of the contest as the women fell, 9-2.
Game two began with a similar start as the first as Florida Tech got out to a 1-0 lead thanks to French going yard in the bottom half of the second inning. However, Tampa answer with a home run of their own in their next plate appearance that made it 3-1.
Tampa extended Florida Tech's deficit to 4-1 in the top of the sixth off back-to-back extra-base hits and to 5-1 off a Panther error. In the seventh, the Spartans hit another home run over the left-field fence and pushed the score to 6-1 and that's where it finished.
Tech takes a few days off before they head to Miami Shores, Florida for the first doubleheader against the Bucs of Barry. Game one at Buccaneer Softball Field will begin at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday, March 24.
