BOCA RATON, Fla. – After a great opening day where Florida Tech softball swept the doubleheader. They were back at it again with another doubleheader against Lynn and this time they complete the season sweep as they won 8-4 and 10-1.
Cheyenne Nelson had another big day as she went 5-7 with three runs, four RBI, a walk and two steals. Newcomers
Emily Figueroa (4-6),
Chloe French (3-6) and
Mikayla Lewin (2-4) each made their mark as they combined for nine hits, eight runs, six RBI, one double, one triple, three walks and a steal.
Four Panther pitchers took to the circle as
Samantha Guider (1-0) and
Jordan Lawlis (2-0) were tasked with starter duties. Rachel Trocki and
Allison Platon got relief stints and guided the team across the finish line.
Game one of the afternoon started out slow as the first three half innings ended without a run scoring but that did not last as Lynn opened the gates in the bottom of the second as they took a 1-0 lead.
The deficit quickly evaporated as the Panthers' next plate appearance put four runs on the board and made it 4-1. Figueroa was the first Panther that sent someone home as she scored Lewin.
Mikayla Wessel was next as her two-run fielder's choice made it 3-1. The final run of the third was a
Tina Velazquez Rolon sacrifice fly that brought Nelson across the bag.
Tech's lead grew again in the top half of the fourth as three more runs scored and made it a 7-1 contest. Figueroa again was the catalyst this time with a triple to right field that allowed
Ashley Campbell and French time to trot home. A Nelson single later in the inning scored Figueroa.
However, Lynn did not go away quietly as they rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth and brought it within three. The final run of the contest came in the next half inning as Nelson for the second time in the game got an RBI thanks to a single to center field and this made it 8-4.
The fourth and final game of the series began with the Crimson & Grey grabbing the first run in their first time at the plate. This 1-0 lead was courtesy of a Velazquez Rolon single to center that pushed Nelson across home plate.
This score held until Tech's bats exploded in fourth as they scored nine runs and made it a 10-0 contest. Nelson started the fun as she singled down the right-field line, which brought home
Jolie Miracle and Lewin. Wessel batted in the next run and she was followed by Velazquez Rolon. French was the next Panther that sent someone home as she singled to left field and a Lewin double later in the inning scored two more. Miracle's two-run double round out the nine runs.
Florida Tech will get a few days rest before they get back to action Wednesday, March 10, when they welcome Nova Southeastern to campus for a doubleheader slated to begin at 3 pm ET.
