Tech Drops Road Finale at Rollins

Panthers fall to Tars 12-9 on Wednesday in Winter Park

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Florida Tech fell to Rollins 12-9 in its final road game of the season on Friday at Barker Family Stadium in Winter Park. 
 
Reid Chaconas led the Panther offense with three goals, his fifth multi-goal game of the season. Justin Williams added two goals and an assist while Chandler Hake scored twice in the game. Zach Rozgonyi tallied a goal and an assist and Matt LeCompte scored one goal. Tommy Bowser, Matt Gutmann and Andy Stump all finished with one assist. 
 
Kyle Sergio paced the defense with four caused turnovers and four ground balls, while Josh Vetter collected three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Cristian Torres picked up two caused turnovers and two ground balls and Austin Smith added a ground ball and one caused turnover. Vincent Palermo faced 38 shots in the game and finished with 10 saves to go along with two ground balls and one caused turnover. 
 
Ethan Tosheff won 9-15 (.600) face-offs in addition to picking up six ground balls while Jack Maranto went 4-9 on face-offs. 
 
Chaconas scored the opening goal of the game off an assist from Stump to put the Panthers up 1-0 with 11 minutes left in the first quarter. Later in the quarter, Luke Jayne forced a turnover by the Tars goalkeeper, and Hake scooped up the loose ball and scored on the empty net to give Tech a 2-1 lead with 4:28 to go. 
 
Rollins' Bailey Pringle scored twice over the final 3:37 of the first quarter, including with one second left on the clock, and the Tars took a 3-2 edge into the second. 
 
Chaconas converted a man-up opportunity and evened the score at 3-3 off an assist from Rozgonyi with 12:39 to go in the second quarter. However, RC responded with five unanswered goals to corral an 8-3 advantage with 2:27 remaining before halftime. Williams ended the run, scoring his first of the game with 1:24 left, to make the margin 8-4 at the break. 
 
A back-handed shot by Chaconas kicked off the scoring in the second half and trimmed the Panthers' deficit to three with 13:08 left in the third.
 
After Rollins pushed its lead to 9-5, LeCompte answered with a goal off an assist from Bowser. Rollins was called for a late hit on the play, setting the Panthers up with an extra-man opportunity. One minute later, Williams fed Rozgonyi on the crease for a man-up goal to cut the margin to 9-7 with 4:14 to go in the third quarter. 
 
The Tars scored with just over two minutes to go in the third and then twice more in the fourth quarter to grab a 12-7 edge with six minutes to go in regulation. Hake made it a 12-8 game with a goal right on the crease with 2:07 remaining. With the seconds waning, Williams snuck a shot past the Tars' goalie right at the buzzer for his second goal and a bittersweet ending to the game.
 
Rollins finished with an edge in shots (38-33), shots on goal (22-21), caused turnovers (14-13) and ground balls (42-31). Florida Tech collected more face-offs (13-11) while going 22-27 on clears. RC was successful on 27-35 clear attempts.
 
Florida Tech looks to close out the season strong when the Panthers host Saint Leo on Saturday, May 8, for Senior Day. The contest is set to begin at 1 p.m. at Panther Field.
