No. 17 Bucs Control Second Half in Win over Panthers

Florida Tech falls to No. 17 Barry 89-69 on Wednesday night in Miami Shores

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

FIRST HALF: 
  • Barry opened the scoring on a second-chance three-point play by Justinas Marcinkevicius on its first possession of the game.
  • Consecutive layups by Runako Ziegler gave Tech a 4-3 lead with 16:14 left. 
  • With 8:05 to go in the first half, Sesan Russell knocked down a pair of free throws to put Tech up 21-19. It was Russell's first points since going down with an injury vs. FAU on Dec. 17.
  • After Ameer Bennett knocked down a jumper in the paint to put the Panthers up 25-23 with 5:26 remaining, Barry went on an 8-0 run to grab a 31-25 lead with 3:35 to go. 
  • Russell answered the Bucs' run with a 3 on the ensuing possession to cut the margin to 31-28 with 3:18 remaining. 
  • Panthers scored the final points of the half and went into the break trailing 34-31.

SECOND HALF: 
  • Sean Houpt knocked down his only 3 of the game to tie the contest at 36 less than a minute into the second half. 
  • Bucs answered with a 13-4 run to corral a 49-40 advantage with 15:05 to go. 
  • After the Panthers cut the margin to 51-46 on a pair of free throws by Russell, the Bucs knocked down two shots beyond the arc to push their lead to double-figures, 57-46, with 11:50 remaining.
  • Panthers' shooting struggles allowed Barry to grow its lead to 83-63 on a three-point play by Marcinkevicius with 2:32 left on the clock.
  • Bucs cruised the rest of the way to a 20-point home victory.

NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • Sean Houpt scored a game-high 17 points and added 5 rebounds and 2 blocks on 6-13 shooting and 4-4 from the free throw line.
  • Mekhii Noble added 16 points, 7 rebounds, 1 block and 1 steal on 6-11 shooting and 4-6 at the charity stripe.
  • Runako Ziegler recorded 14 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal on 5-11 shooting and 4-7 at the line.
  • After almost a month off, Sesan Russell returned to the starting lineup and tallied 10 points, 3 steals, 2 rebounds and 2 assists while making 5-10 on free throws. 
     
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Florida Tech finished the game shooting 38.2% (21-55) from the field, including 15.8% (3-19) beyond the arc, and 71% (22-31) on free throws.
  • Barry made 47.1% (33-70) of its shot attempts in the game, including 40.7% (11-27) from three, and converted 75% (12-16) at the line.
  • Bucs won the rebounding battle (37-36).
  • Barry led in second-chance points (18-10), bench points (34-10), points in the paint (36-32) and points off turnovers (19-11).

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Bucs improve their all-time record vs. Florida Tech to 46-26.
  • Panthers drop their fifth straight road game at Barry. Tech's last win in Miami Shores came on Jan. 6, 2018. 

UP NEXT: Florida Tech looks to bounce back as the Panthers return to the Clemente Center on Saturday, Jan. 15, hosting Lynn in SSC action. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
