Men’s Soccer Conquer Bearcats In Penalty Kicks To Advance to the Sweet 16

Luis Tovar Romero made 2 huge saves in PKs to help the Panthers move on to the next round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament.

MELBOURNE, Fla.- In a second-round thriller match between Florida Tech and the Lander Bearcats, both teams battled through regulation and two overtime periods, but the game would ultimately be decided on penalty kicks. The Panthers advance on PKs 4-2.

STATS OF THE MATCH: 
  • The Panthers came out of the gate looking for an early opportunity to score. In the first 10 minutes, Tech fired off three shots.
  • The Bearcats got on the board first on a goal by Max McNulty off an assist from Jed Smith in the 32nd minute of play.
  • Tech was looking for a chance to tie things up before the half but were unable to do so.
  • Lander led 1-0 at the half.
  • Coming out of the half, the Panthers brought the momentum trying to find the equalizer.
  • Just after halftime, Nokkvi Nokkvason found the back of the net, but the referees would call offsides and the goal would not count.
  • Joeran Osland and Hugo Catherine set up Nokkvason perfectly in front of the Bearcats net and Nokkvason was able to get one past the Bearcats goalkeeper Lorenzo Ferrari.
  • Suddenly, the momentum shifted to the Panthers.
  • With just about 15 minutes left in regulation, both teams fired off shots trying to find that game-winning goal.
  • As the clock expired at the end of regulation, we were all tied up at one a piece.
  • After two overtime periods, the score would remain at 1-1- and we would head to penalty kicks to decide the winner of this game.
  • At the end of overtime, Tech led in shots 17-13 and corner kicks 10-2.
  • Fabio Amaral and Lander's Max McNulty both scored to make it 1-1 at the end of the first round.
  • Bearcats Kevin Rubaszewski attempted a penalty pick, but the Sunshine State Defensive Player of the year LuisTovar Romero made a huge stop.
  • In the next round of PKs Soeren Nygaard and Rob Dymond made their PKs to tie things up 2-2.
  •  Osland converted his PK to put Tech ahead 3-2.
  • Lander's Carson Dinger was up next to try and close the gap, but once again Tovar Romero wasn't letting one get by him.
  • The Panthers just needed one more PK to win this thriller of a game.
  • Catherine sealed the deal with his PK and Tech would advance 4-2.
  • It was a physical match between the two teams with 15 cautions being handed out.
  • Tech received six of them.
  • Tovar Romero made four goals, while the Bearcats Ferrari made eight.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Florida Tech advances to the Sweet 16 for the 10th time in program history.
  • The Panthers are 1-1-1 all time versus Lander.
  • This is the first meeting between the two teams since a 1-0 win on September 1, 1996.
  • Today's game was the Panthers 10th appearance at home in the NCAA Tournament all-time.
  • Tech is 7-1-2 at home in the NCAA Tournament
  • Nokkvason scored his first goal of the season.
  • Catherine recorded his third assist, while Osland recorded his second.
