Panthers Rout Saints for MacArthur's First Win

Nine-goal second quarter propels Florida Tech to 17-6 win over Flagler

FIRST QUARTER:
  • Justin Williams scored the first three goals of the game for the Panthers, netting two of those tallies in the first quarter. His first goal came on an unassisted effort just 56 seconds after the opening faceoff, and the second goal was off an assist from Bennett Duffy to put Tech up 2-1 with 2:46 to go in the quarter. 
  • Flagler tied the game at 2-2 with 1:55 remaining in the opening frame, and the score remained the same as the teams went into the second quarter.
 
SECOND QUARTER:
  • Williams completed his hat trick just 40 seconds into the second off an assist from Nate Deplancke and kicked off a big quarter for the Panthers in which they outscored the Saints 9-1. 
  • Duffy also recorded a hat trick in the second quarter, three of his team-high four goals in the game.
  • Flagler tallied its third goal to make it a 6-3 margin with 9:31 left in the half. 
  • Five different players, Collin Stewart, Griffin Bowie, Ben Claffee, Aran Heath and Nate Deplancke, accounted for the other five goals for Tech in the quarter and the Panthers took an 11-3 advantage into halftime. 

THIRD QUARTER: 
  • Duffy's fourth goal of the game came off an assist from Bowie just 1:14 into the third quarter to make the score 12-3. 
  • Saints scored with 11:52 left in the third to trim the margin to 12-4. 
  • Panthers ensued on a 3-0 run on goals by Jakob Terpak, Nate Deplancke and Matt Gutmann to push the lead to 15-4 with 5:17 to go in the quarter. 

FOURTH QUARTER:
  • Gavin Stecher scored his first career goal off an assist from Cole Bonnell to increase the advantage to 16-5 with 4:40 remaining. 
  • Saints scored their final goal with 24 seconds to go. 
  • With time waning down, Patrick Stewart was able to beat the buzzer for the Panthers' final goal of the game off an assist from Jake Rider to bring the score to its final 11-goal margin. 
     
NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • Bennett Duffy led all players with 6 points on 4 goals and 2 assists.
  • Justin Williams recorded 3 goals and 1 assist.
  • Nate Deplancke added 2 goals and 2 assists.
  • Griffin Bowie finished with 1 goal and 3 assists.
  • Jakob Terpak tallied a goal and an assist.
  • Six Panthers finished with 1 goal and five others dished out 1 assist. 
  • Josh Vetter collected 4 ground balls and 3 caused turnovers.
  • Austin Engeler added 3 ground balls and 3 caused turnovers.
  • JP Thomas had 4 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers. 
  • Sam Balch recorded 2 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers.
  • Nick Cannetti grabbed 5 ground balls and 1 caused turnover.
  • Ethan Tosheff, Jack Maranto and Andy Degner combined to go 13-of-26 on faceoffs with 7 ground balls.
  • John Hulsman earned his second win of the season in goal for the Panthers, finishing with 6 saves and a save percentage of .600.
  • Connor Davis saw time in net for Tech during the third and fourth quarters and finished with 5 saves and a save percentage of .714. 

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Panthers finished with an edge in shots (42-28), shots on goal (28-17) and ground balls (55-33). 
  • Tech was successful on 19-of-20 clears compared to 14-of-20 for the Saints. 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The win is Brad MacArthur's first as head coach of the Florida Tech men's lacrosse program. 
  • This was the first ever meeting between Florida Tech and Flagler.
  • Tech's 9-goal second quarter tied a school record for most goals scored in a single quarter in program history. The Panthers also scored nine in the second quarter against Saint Michael's on March 18, 2015. 

UP NEXT: Florida Tech is back in action March 5 as the Panthers take on #13 Seton Hill in a neutral site game at US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Md. The game is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. at Tierney Field.
