Early Spartan Avalanche Ends Panther Winning Streak

Three home runs in first three innings prove too much for Tech

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

STATS OF GAME:
  • Florida Tech took a lead in the top of the first thanks to a wild pitch on ball four to Brett Parrish that allowed Paul Castillo to score.
  • The first three Spartan batters reached base against Panthers starter Danny Vassallo, capped by E.J. Cumbo's three-run homer.
  • Nicholas Winkelmeyer concluded the first inning scoring with an RBI single through the right side.
  • The Crimson and Gray would get one back in the top of the third on a two-out triple to center by Parrish that scored Jakob Newton
  • The Spartans responded with another four spot in the bottom half courtesy of back-to-back home runs by J.D. Urso (three-run) and Winkelmeyer. 
  • A Jamarcus Lyons fielder's choice in the sixth and a Jordan Lala RBI single in the seventh concluded the scoring.
  • After throwing 13 1/3 scoreless innings to start the season, Vassallo was tagged for eight runs (six earned) on eight hits in two and one-thirds innings of work. He struck out two and walked none
  • Boris Villa threw three and two-thirds innings in relief of Vassallo. He allowed one run on two hits, struck out five and walked three. 41 of his 66 pitches were for strikes.
  • Alec Eldridge recorded Tech's lone multi-hit effort of the night. 
  • Eldridge, Newton, Parrish and Sam Schner all stole a base. 
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Spartans now lead the all-time series 124-34.
  • Newton extended his on-base streak to 12 consecutive games with his third inning single. 
UP NEXT:  The two teams will conclude the series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 P.M.
