Panthers Upset No.4 Lenoir-Rhyne on the Road

 
HICKORY, N.C. – Florida Tech's first road match of the season was a 2021 Elite Eight rematch against #4 Lenoir-Rhyne. For the fourth time in series history, Tech and LR met with high stakes. In this one, the No. 18 Panthers defeated the No. 4 Bears 2-1.

STATS OF THE MATCH: 
  • Coming out of the gate strong, Allyn Jamie fired a shot 30-seconds into the match but was unlucky hitting the goal post.
  • As LR fired a shot at the top of the penalty box at the 5' mark, Maria Sanchez Recuero was able to get a hand on it and knock it away.
  • The Bear's keeper was able to swat back-to-back corner kicks away eliminating Tech's chances at 15'.
  • LR took the lead in the 24' when the ball was sent into the Bears' attacking third and Ellie Hansson was able to find her footing, sending the ball right past Sanchez Recuero into the bottom left corner.
  • In the 31', Cristina Garriga sent a great insert from the right side into the box where Marem Ndiongue was there to head it home, tying up the game.
  • Just three minutes into the second half, the go-ahead goal came off the boot of Garriga, assisted by May Queiroz.
  • LR's best look of the second half came in the 75' with a wide-open shot but went far left.
  • Attempting to tie it up, LR had another solid scoring chance in the 86' with a cross from the opposite side beating the Panther defense but a Bear forward was called offside.
  • LR outshot Tech 16-11 including 8-3 shots on goal.
  • Panthers led the game in corner kicks 7-2.
  • Sanchez Recuero tallied six saves in the first half, while Ayana Aoyagi recorded one in the second half for the Panthers.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • This is Florida Tech's third-ever win over a top-4 ranked opponent. The Panther's two other victories were both 2-1 decisions, over No. 1 Grand Valley State on Oct. 5, 2016, and No. 2 Columbus State on Oct. 12, 2021.
  • The last, and only other time, Tech defeated LR was Sept. 9th, 2011 in a 2-1 win in Hickory, N.C.
  • Tech moves to 1-0-3 all-time LR
  • Panthers have recorded 17 corner kicks in the first three games while holding their opponents to just five corners.
  • Ndiongue's goal was her third of the season and ninth of her career.
  • Garriga's goal was her first in a Panther uniform and the fifth of her career.
  • Tech is now 1-0 against ranked opponents this season.
  • Tonight's match was a 2021 Elite Eight rematch when the Bears defeated Tech 4-3 in Penalty Kicks.
