Strong Second-Half Lifts Tech Over Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Florida Tech women's soccer team used two goals in the final eight minutes of the match to defeat Rollins on the road in a Wednesday night Sunshine State Conference (SSC) showdown.

STATS OF THE MATCH
  • Both teams started the match out in a battle for possession. Tech put the first shot on target in the 19th minute after Marem Ndiongue found some open space, but her attempt was stopped by the Rollins keeper.
  • In the 26th minute, Ndiongue made her way into the box again, but she was unable to sneak her shot past the keeper and the match remained knotted at 0-0.
  • Just three minutes later, Rollins threatened with a shot on target by Lexie Cooper. Ayana Aoyagi made a great save to keep the game tied.
  • The battle for possession was back on for the remaining minutes of the half. The Panthers were able to outshoot the Tars 7-2 in the first half.
  • Tech came out firing in the second half with three more shots on target in the first few minutes, but the Rollins keeper made a save on each shot attempt.
  • Both teams continued to go back and forth trading shots and possession over the next several minutes.
  • The Tars threatened in the 77th minute after they earned a corner kick. Aoyagi punched the attempt away and then made a spectacular diving save on the rebound shot to keep the match scoreless.
  • In the 82nd minute, Ndiongue sent a pass up to Josefine Nilsen, who broke away from her defender and knocked the ball into the back of the net to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead late in the match.
  • Just three minutes later, Lauryn Wood drew a foul in the box and converted on her penalty kick to extend the lead to 2-0 for Tech.
  • Rollins didn't roll over and managed another shot on goal in the 89th minute, but Aoyagi came up with the final save of the match to secure the shutout victory for the Panthers.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Florida Tech moves to 8-15-4 all-time against Rollins and 4-9-3 all-time on the road against the Tars.
  • This was the first win in Winter Park for Tech since 2015.
  • With her assist in the 82nd minute, Marem Ndiongue is now second in program history in all-time assists (13).
  • Josefine Nilsen scored her second goal as a member of the Panthers and her first since she scored in Tech's 2-0 win over Lynn earlier this season on Sept. 30.
 
UP NEXT: Florida Tech's next match will be on Saturday, Oct. 28 at home against No. 19 Flagler. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Rick Stottler Field. The Panthers will also be honoring their graduating seniors prior to the match for Senior Day.
