Strong Second Half Earns Panthers 1-1 Draw Against No. 5 Embry-Riddle

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Florida Tech women's soccer team used a strong second half and a goal from junior Savannah Oxley to earn a 1-1 draw against fifth-ranked Embry-Riddle on Wednesday night.

STATS OF THE MATCH
  • Embry-Riddle came out fast and got a shot on target in the first minute, but Ayana Aoyagi came up with the diving save to stymie the Eagles.
  • After some back-and-forth in the midfield, Lauryn Wood ripped a shot at the goal in the 18th minute, but a great save by the Eagles keeper kept the game scoreless.
  • Six minutes later, Embry-Riddle was able to sneak through the defense and Berglind Thrastardot found the back of the net to Embry-Riddle up 1-0.
  • Both teams battled for possession for the next several minutes.
  • With the clock winding down in the final minute of the half, Josefine Nilsen crossed the ball into the box on a corner kick. The ball was hit around a few times and Marem Ndiongue knocked the ball into the goal just a second after the halftime whistle blew and the teams went into the break with a 1-0 score.
  • Just five minutes into the second half, Ndiongue worked through the defense and dished a pass to Savannah Oxley, who smashed the equalizer into the top corner of the goal to make it a 1-1 match.
  • The teams traded shots and possession for several minutes. Tech's best opportunity came in the 76th minute when Ndiongue took a shot that sailed just over the crossbar.
  • Embry-Riddle threatened in the 87th minute with back-to-back shots by Marie Myhrvold, but both attempts were saved by Aoyagi to keep the match tied.
  • With less than a minute remaining, Wood found some space in the box and took a shot, but her attempt was blocked by an Eagle defender and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Florida Tech moves to 3-8-4 all-time against Embry-Riddle and 2-6-1 all-time against the Eagles in Daytona Beach.
  • Ayana Aoyagi matched her career-high with five saves in the match.
  • Savannah Oxley scored her second goal of the season and first since she scored against Union on Sept. 2, 2023.
  • Marem Ndiongue's assist moved her into a tie for fourth all-time in program history with 11.
 
UP NEXT: Florida Tech's next match will be at home against Barry on Wednesday, Oct. 11. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Rick Stottler Field.
