Panthers Late Rally Falls Short at No. 10 Rollins

WINTER PARK, FLA. -  For it's season opener for the 2023 season, Florida Tech traveled to No. 10 Rollins for a game that counted as nonconference. The Panthers struggled to find the timely hit throughout the night, ultimately falling 4-1. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Location: Alfond Stadium at Harper-Sheperd Field | Winter Park, Fla. 

STATS OF GAME: 

  • In the bottom of the first inning, Rollins threatened with two runners on. To get out of the inning unscathed, Florida Tech rolled a 4-6-3 double play. 
  • After both teams were held scoreless going into the fifth inning, the Tars blew open the game. Four singles in the frame for Rollins led to four runs. 
  • In the sixth inning, the Panthers had runners on first and third with two outs, but a strikeout ended the threat. 
  • Florida Tech did not go down without a fight in the ninth inning. To get the Panthers on the board, Sam Schner drove in Gabe Garrett with a single to right field.  
  • Florida Tech threatened to do more damage late with the bases loaded and two outs. However, an infield pop-out ended the ball game.  
  • Panthers starting RHP Mitch Harding took the loss for the Panthers, throwing four innings with three earned runs to his name. The junior struck out six batters and walked two. 
  • Danny Vassallo and Zach Rodgers each threw two innings for Tech out of the bullpen. Vassallo was responsible for one earned run in the fifth inning. 
  • Offensively, Florida Tech had seven hits. Schner and Brett Parrish each had two hits to lead the way. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE: 

  • The Panthers drop to 72-83-1 all-time against Rollins.
  • The Crimson and Gray are now 27-13-1 in season openers dating back to 1980.

UP NEXT: The Panthers begin a four-game weekend series with No. 12 Wingate tomorrow February 2nd. First pitch from Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field is scheduled for 6 p.m.
