Panthers split DH With No. 20 West Florida, Lose Series

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Florida Tech had its first doubleheader of the season on the road at No. 20 West Florida. The Panthers won the first game in exciting fashion before being defeated in the second game.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Game 1 Final: Florida Tech 2, No. 20 West Florida

Records: Florida Tech (6-5, 0-0 SSC) | (West Florida 7-2,0-0 GSC)
Location: Jim Spooner Field | Pensacola, Fla.

STATS OF GAME 1:

  • Tech had the first scoring opportunity in the game when Alec Eldridge laced a one-out opposite-field double in the top of the first. He would advance to third on a groundout but was ultimately stranded there.
  • The Argonauts put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the second through Preston Moore's leadoff double. The rally would be short-circuited when Austin Sewell threw out Moore at third to end the inning when he attempted to advance on a Tyler Dowdy flyout.
  • UWF had two on with two out in the third but Sean Means got out of the jam by striking out Jadon Fryman.
  • West Florida would load the bases in the following frame. However, Means would once again escape damage by inducing an inning-ending fielder's choice from Mike Scordo.
  • Josh Ford helped extinguish another Argos scoring opportunity in the sixth by throwing out Moore at third on a stolen base attempt.
  • The Panthers' go-ahead rally in the top of the ninth was kickstarted by Brett Parrish's one-out double to right center. Two batters later, Roman Samson's continued his recent penchant for heroics with a two-out, two-run home run that ultimately proved the game's final score
  • Means threw five and one-thirds innings of shutout ball, striking out six and allowing just three hits in the process. Tyler Vermillion earned his third win in three appearances this season by allow just one hit over the next two and two-thirds innings while striking out a pair. Ethan Stephens earned his second save of the campaign with a scoreless ninth.
