No. 12 Wingate Levels Series With Panthers

MELBOURNE, FLA. -  After defeating No. 12 Wingate in game one, Florida Tech looked to build off its momentum into game two of the three-game series. However, the Bulldogs spoiled the party with 14 hits that led to a 7-3 victory.  

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

STATS OF GAME: 

  • With two outs in the first inning, the Bulldogs took a 1-0 advantage on a miscue in the outfield by the Panthers. 
  • Wingate doubled its lead in the second inning on an RBI single from leadoff hitter Isaiah Williams-Rhem.  
  • Florida Tech loaded the bases with one out in the second inning, but back-to-back strikeouts from Wingate starting RHP Mitch Farris ended the threat. 
  • The Bulldogs utilized another outfield error in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead. 
  • The Wingate lead reached 5-0 in the fifth inning as two extra-base hits scored two more runs. 
  • Farris threw five innings of scoreless baseball while giving up just two hits and striking out 10 Florida Tech batters. 
  • With two outs in the seventh inning, Wingate tacked on its sixth run of the night on an RBI single to left field by Lane Rhodes. 
  • Gabe Garrett got the Panthers on the board in the seventh inning with an RBI single to right field that scored Austin Sewell who came in the game as a pinch hitter. 
  • A bunt single from Sam Schner followed by a throwing error scored another run for the Panthers in the seventh.  
  • The last Panthers run of the night came when Brett Parrish was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded later on in the seventh inning. 
  • Wingate answered Tech's rally in the eighth inning with an RBI double by Seaver King to push the lead to 7-3. 
  • Florida Tech starting RHP Dylan Cleveland took the loss throwing four innings, and allowing three runs, none of which were earned runs. He gave up six hits and struck out six.  
  • RHP Danny Vassallo worked three innings in relief and gave up three earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts.  
  • RHP Carter Cooke and RHP Aiden Beechy sat down the Bulldogs in order in the eight and ninth innings, respectively. 
  • Offensively, Tech had five hits with Garrett and Jason Blackstone each having two hits to lead the way.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE: 
  • The Panthers move to 3-5 all-time against Wingate. 
  • Garrett has a three-game hitting streak to begin the season.  

UP NEXT: The Panthers play Wingate tomorrow, Feb. 4 at 12 PM to decide who wins the series.
