Panthers Split Doubleheader with Lions


MELBOURNE, FLA.- Florida Tech softball continued its series with the Lions on Saturday in a doubleheader. The Panthers took game one 4-2, but the Lions came storming back to shut the Panthers out in game 2, 8-0.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 2nd inning, Kelly McLaughlin's 2-run RBI single gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
  • Ella Gibson scored Mikayla Lewin from third base in the 3rd inning tacking on another run for Tech.
  • The Lions battled back in the top of the 4th inning. Back-to-back singles by the Lions scored two runs to cut their deficit to just one run.
  • McLaughlin's sacrifice fly in the 6th inning added an insurance run for the Panthers, giving them a 4-2 lead heading into the 7th inning.
  • An error by the Panthers allowed Alyssa Perez to reach base in the top of the 7th. The Lions had an opportunity to tie things up with two outs, but the Panthers were able to come away with the win.
  • Samantha Guider pitched a complete game for the Panthers, allowing two runs on seven hits. Guider had four strikeouts and threw 91 pitches.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Briana Neal's two-run homer in the 1st inning gave the Lions an early lead.
  • The Lions scored another in the 5th inning on a RBI single from Neal.
  • In the top of the 6th, the Lions tacked on two more runs to take a 5-0 lead.
  • Two errors by the Panthers in the 7th inning allowed two more runs to score.
  • Florida Tech had three hits and three errors.
  • Alex Hendrian suffered her third loss of the season. Hendrian threw two innings allowing two runs on five hits.
  • Allison Platon threw four solid innings allowing three runs on seven hits. Platon also had two strikeouts.
  • Samantha Guider relieved Platon in the top of the 7th. Guider allowing three runs on three hits.
  • Saint Leo's Kayla Betts had five strikeouts and gave up just three hits.


BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Florida Tech is now 52-79-1against Saint Leo the all-time series.
  • Kelly McLaughlin went 1-4 at the plate and drove in three runs.
  • Ella Niles is 9-9 on stolen bases this season. Niles had one stolen base in game one.
 
UP NEXT: Florida Tech will travel be back home next Tuesday, March 7th to take on Alderson Broaddus University in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 4pm.
