Florida Tech Splits Saturday's Double Header Against Barry

MIAMI SHORES, FLA. - The Florida Tech baseball team split Saturday's double header against the Barry, closing out the weekend series with one win and two loses to the Buccaneers.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Game 1 Final: Florida Tech 3, Barry 6
Game 2 Final: Florida Tech 8, Barry 5
Records: Florida Tech (20-15, 9-9 SSC) | BARRY (21-17, 11-10 SSC)
Location: Feinbloom Field| Miami Shores, Fla.
 
STATS OF GAME 1:
  • The Panthers started the first game of Saturdays double header with three runs in the top of the third to take an early lead.
  • Josh Ford drove in the first two runs with a single down the left field line to score Jason Blackstone and Gabe Garret while advancing Brett Kelly to third.
  • The next at-bat, Gavin McGowen drove in Kelly off a sacrifice fly ball to left field.
  • The game remained 3-0 in the Panthers favor until Barry scored one run in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Leading 3-1, Ridge Skarbek came into relief for Danny Vassallo to start the seventh inning.
  • After six innings, Vassallo allowed just four hits, one earned run, one walk and three strikeouts having faced 22 batters.
  • A big five running eighth inning from Barry pushed the Buccaneers past the Panthers and closed Tech out in the top of the ninth to take game one of the double headers by a score of 6-3.
STATS OF GAME 2:
  • The Panthers took a lead early on, as Josh Ford and Brett Kelly scored of a single from Gavin McGowin in the first inning.
  • The Buccaneers rallied back scoring one run in the bottom of the first to make it a 2-1 ballgame.
  • Brett Kelly hit a two-run homer in the top of the third, scoring Jason Blackstone to go up 4-1.
  • Barry answered back with a solo homerun in the bottom of the third.
  • Scoring once in the fourth and twice in the sixth, the Buccaneers took the lead for the first time in the second game of Saturdays double with a 5-4 s lead.
  • The Panthers tied the game back up tat 5-5- wo inning later as Alex Eldred drove in Hayden Kimball a
  • Dylan Cleveland got the start for the third game of the season throwing 5.2 innings while striking out one batter and allowed five earned runs.
  • Tyler Vermillion took over for Cleveland with one out remaining in the sixth throwing 1.1. innings in relief, striking out one batter along the way while, giving up just one hit and no earned runs.
  • In the top of the eighth, Ford singled to left.
  • Hayden Kimball, would come in to pinch run for Ford and later score the tying run, driven in by Alec Eldridge.
  • Zach Rodgers relieved Vermillion to start the eights for the Panthers where he too, struck out one batter while allowing just one t and no error.
  • With neither team able to score in the ninth, the game went into extra inning where following a double from Kimball was later driven in by Tate Hansen who later single to left field to put the Panthers up 6-5. 
  • The following at play Hansen scored from first after a double from Eldridge.
  • With Eldridge on third due to a wild pitch, a Barry error allowed Eldridge to score giving the Panthers an 8-5 lead.
  • Christian Galindo entered the game at the top of the ninth and after two innings of work in the ninth and tenth, earned the decision and allowing Florida Tech to split Saturdays double header with an 8-5 win in game two. 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Florida Tech is now 72-66 all time against the Buccaneers.
  • Blackstone now extends his hitting streak to 13 consecutive games with hits in both games today.
  • Eldridge's double in the tenth was the 50th extra-base hit of his career.
