Moccasin Lineup Overwhelms Again to Earn Sweep of Panthers

Melbourne, Fla. - Playing in front of the home crowd for the final time in 2023, Florida Tech were unable to overcome a scorching hot Florida Southern offense, who established an early lead and never looked back to complete a sweep of the Panthers on Monday afternoon.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Florida Southern 10, Florida Tech 3
Records: Florida Tech (22-24, 11-16 SSC) | Florida Southern (32-15, 17-10 SSC)
Location: Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field | Melbourne, Fla.

STATS OF GAME :
  • The Moccasins would strike first in the top of the third against Panthers starting pitcher Dylan Cleveland
  • Sean Riley would begin the frame with a single through the left side. He would advance on an El'Rico Riley groundout and after Jevin Relaford flew out, D'Ante Starks would take matters into his own hands with a two-run homer to left to give the Mocs the lead.
  • FSC would continue to tack on in the top of the fourth, this time it was consecutive one-out singles from Bryce Safferwich and Mitch Donofrio setting the stage for the rally.
  • Sean Riley's single back through the box plated Safferwich and after a steal of second, both runners would come home to score on a double to deep left off the bat of El'Rico Riley.
  • The Mocs would put the game out of sight the following inning with Ryan Magdic leading off with an opposite-field home run to left center.
  • Connor Berry would continue the output with a single to left and would then take third on a double into the left field corner by Safferwich.
  • A walk to Donofrio would load the bases for Sean Riley who would ground into a double play that plated Berry. Cleveland prevented any further damage by inducing a fly out from the final batter he faced, El'Rico Riley.
  • The Moccasin barrage would continue in the top of the sixth against Panther reliever Andrew Dunham.
  • Relaford walked and Starks was hit by a pitch to start the frame, which was then followed by a Cavanaugh flyout to left that advanced Relaford and when the relay throw was mishandled, Relaford would sprint home to score.
  • FSC would add two more in the eighth against FT reliever Zach Rodgers, beginning with a one-out walk to Cavanaugh.
  • After a Magdic single put runners at the corners, Connor Berry's single to center drove in Cavanaugh and one batter later, Donofrio's sacrifice fly to right scored Magdic.
  • The Panther got on the board for the first time in the bottom of the eighth against Mocs reliever Evan Mobley, with Sam Schner's leadoff single to the opposite field jump starting the rally.
  • A Brett Kelly single would move Schner to second and a fielder's choice would put runners on the corners with one out.
  • After pinch-hitter Hayden Kimball struck out, a ball off the bat of Josh Ford found its way through the right side to bring home Schner.
  • Tech would cap the scoring in the bottom of the ninth, which began with a one-out walk to pinch-hitter William Quinones, making his final home plate appearance.
  • Following a Gabe Garrett single through the right side, Schner tripled into the right field corner to bring home both runners.
  • Schner's three-hit game in the Panthers' 11-hit attack. Ford and Garrett each tallied two hits.
  • Alec Eldridge and Brett Parrish each recorded a hit in their final home game.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Panthers are now 34-111 all-time against the Moccasins.
  • Garrett has recorded a hit in 14 of his past 16 games with five being multi-hit efforts.
  • Schner went five-for-eleven (.454) at the plate for the series.
  • Ford's 23 RBI this season are a new career high.
