Volleyball Falls in Five at Embry-Riddle

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – The Florida Tech Panthers volleyball program fell in five sets to Embry-Riddle on the road in Daytona Beach, Fla. Friday Night for Tech's SSC opener.

STATS OF THE MATCH:

First Set:
  • The Panthers jumped out to a 4-2 lead with a kill by Devyn Glassgold before Embry-Riddle would tie the set at 4-4.
  • Another Run would put Tech ahead 11-8 until the Eagles recorded three straight points to tie the set.
  • Kills from Lexi Lueger and Glassgold would help the Panthers score four of the next five points to lead 15-12.
  • Another three-point run from ERAU would tie the set again at 15-15, before the Panthers responded with a three run streak of their own highlighted by a kill from freshman Cordelia Kearns and service ace from María Jesús Muñoz.
  • With the Panthers ahead 20-17, the Eagles would come back to take a 24-22 lead over the Crimson and Gray.
  • Not going down with a fight, back-to-back kills from Muñoz tied the set at 24-24, before the Eagles would score the next two points to win the set 26-24 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
     
Second Set:
  • Florida Tech took jumped out early 9-4 lead in the second set over ERAU as the Panthers would not trail at all in the second set.
  • To put the Panthers ahead 6-3 was Lueger for what would be the 200th kill of her career.
  • The 9-4 run came with help from three kills by Muñoz, two kills from Lueger and one kill from Antia Vallecas Rodrigues.
  • With ERAU narrowing it's deficit to trail by two at 12-10, a four point run from Tech put the Panthers ahead 16-10. The run was highlighted by a kill from settr Kenzie Delacher and a kill from Muñoz.
  • With the Crimson and Gray taking a 17-13 lead over the Eagles, nine of the next 11 points were scored by the Panthers to give Tech a big 25-15 win in the second set to tie the match at 1-1.
  • The big run to finish the set was supported with two kills from Glassgold, a kill from Vallecas Rodriguez, and the final two kills for Tech coming from Kearns.
 
Third Set:
  • With the Crimson and Gray trailing 5-2 at the start of the third set, a five run unanswered streak by the Panthers gave Tech an 8-6 lead over the Eagles.
  • The Panthers run was capped off by back-to-back kills from Vallecas Rodriguez
  • ERAU would tie the set at 13-13.
  • As Tech and the Eagles battle back and forth, with a 17-16 Panther lead after a kill from Kearns, the Eagles recorded four straight points taking a 20-17 lead.
  • Down by four 22-19, the Crimson and Gray managed to overcome its deficit by scoring four straight to tie the set 22-22. The run was capped off by a kill from Lueger.
  • Once again having to go beyond 25 points, the set was tied 25-25 until Vallecas Rodriguez and Kearns recorded the final two kills in the set, giving the Panthers a 27-25 win and taking a 2-1 lead over Embry-Riddle in the set.
 
Fourth Set:
  • The Panthers only lead of the fourth set came as Tech lead 4-3 until five runs from the Eagles had them ahead 8-4.
  • The Panthers brought the set to within to trailing 9-7 with kills from Muñoz and Glassgold.
  • Another five-point run from ERAU put the eagles ahead 14-7.
  • Late in the set, with tech trailing 19-14, the Eagles scored six of the next seven points to win the set 25-15 and tie the match 2-2 as the match would go to five sets.
 
Fifth Set:
  • The start of the fifth set saw Tech and the Eagles go head-to-head where as after 10 points the set was tied 5-5.
  • Embry-Riddle would pull ahead 9-6 and later jump ahead by five to lead 13-8.
  • A service ace from the Eagles on match point would give ERAU the 15-8 win the the fifth a final set to win the match 3-2.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Volleyball moves to 16-16 all time against Embry-Riddle.
  • Lexi Lueger surpassed 200 career kills in the set
  • Glassgold is six kills shy of reach 200 career kills as she sits at 194.
  • In the final set of the match Courtney Capar recorded her 300th career dig.
  • The only statistical category the Panthers outperformed the Eagles in the match was in digs as Tech recorded 98 digs to ERAU's 90.
  • Vallecas Rodrigues lead the Panthers on offense with 15 kills and 15 points
  • Jeanne Hassoun tallied 28 set assists with Kenzie Delacher recording 22 total set assists in the match.
  • Capar finished the match with a team high 31 total digs.
 
UP NEXT:
The Panthers will return home on Saturday, September 16th  for Back to School night against Rollins College at 4:00 pm in the Clemente Center.
