Panthers Tame Lions to Earn First Conference Win of the Year

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Florida Tech women's soccer team got back in the win column with a 4-1 win over Saint Leo Saturday night at Rick Stottler Field.

STATS OF THE MATCH
  • The Panther got on the board early after Marem Ndiongue used a second-chance header in the eighth minute to put Tech up 1-0.
  • In the 24th minute, Saint Leo threatened to score, but Ayana Aoyagi made the stop in goal to preserve the lead.
  • On the next Panther possession, Lauryn Wood sent a cross into the box that found Katherine Cunningham on the other side. She deposited her shot past the diving Lions keeper to give Tech a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
  • Saint Leo notched a score in the 47th minute with an unassisted goal from Ainsley Meyer to cut into the lead.
  • 10 minutes later, Cunningham had an opportunity to score again but the keeper made a great diving save to keep the game at 2-1.
  • After a back-and-forth battle for possession, a Saint Leo yellow card gave Tech a free kick from about five yards outside the box. Halla Helgadottir smashed her shot into the corner of the net to extend the Panthers lead out to 3-1 in the 79th minute.
  • Tech dominated possession for the rest of the match. In the final 10 seconds, Gema Carreno chipped a pass up to Raisa Lugo who made her way into the box and scored to give the match its final score of 4-1.
  • The Panthers outshot Saint Leo 14-7 on the night and put 11 shots on target.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Florida Tech improves to 10-13-3 all-time against Saint Leo.
  • The Panthers are now 6-2-1 in the last nine matches with the Lions.
  • Marem Ndiongue's goal moved her into sole possession of 10th all-time in career goals (15) and eighth all-time in career points (40) in the Panthers record books.
  • Katherine Cunningham and Raisa Lugo both scored their first goals as Panthers.
