Volleyball Starts off 2-0 at Rollins Invitational

WINTER PARK, FLA. – Friday morning saw the Florida Tech volleyball program pick up it's first win under Head Coach Jordan Willis by defeating Chadron State 3-1 in the days first match of the Rollins Invitational. The second match of the day saw Tech sweep Auburn Montgomery 3-0.

MATCH ONE
FINAL: Florida Tech 3, Chadron State 1
Records: Florida Tech (1-4, 0-0 SSC) Chadron State (2-2, 0-0 RMAC)

STATS OF THE MATCH:
First Set:
  • The Panthers started off the set leading 7-3 with the help of a six-point run.
  • María Jesús Muñoz recorded two kills in the six-point streak with Antia Vallecas Rodriguez tallying a kill of her own with Kenzie Delacher tallying all three assists on the kills.
  • Chadron State battled back tying the set up at seven all.
  • Another big eight-point unanswered run from the Panthers following the tie saw Tech lead 16-8 with kills from Cordelia Kearns, Muñoz, and two from Vallecas Rodriguez.
  • Tech looked to run away with the first set, defeating the Eagles 25-11
  • The Crimson and Gray finished set one with a 0.444 hitting percentage and 15 kills.
 
Second Set:
  • Tech started out set two with a 4-0 run before Chadron State tied the set up at 4-4.
  • Five of the next six points were rewarded to the Eagles as they lead 9-5 and didn't lose the lead for the remainder of the set.
  • The Panthers brought the set back to within three after a four-point run, trailing 19-15.
  • Chadron State later went on to take the set 25-21 and tie the match at 1-1.
 
Third Set:
  • Chiara Patelli started off the set for the Panthers as she recorded the first kill of the set.
  • Kills from Devyn Glassgold and Kearns helped push Tech ahead 7-4 and help the Panthers to not lose the lead for the remainder of the set.
  • Back-to-back kills from Muñoz pushed the Panthers ahead 16-13.
  • The Panthers largest lead of the set came leading 21-15.
  • Kearns would record Tech final point of the set as the kill came assisted by Jeanne Hassoun.
  • Florida Tech eventually took the set 25-20 and lead the match 2-1.
  • Tech finished set three with 15 total kills.
 
Fourth Set
  • Chadron State started the fourth and final set leading 2-0, prior to the Panthers tying the set at 2-2.
  • A service error from the Eagles and Kill from Muñoz assisted by Hassoun allowed Tech to take a 6-4 lead only to see Chadron State tie the set up once again at 6-6.
  • Chadron state managed to take a slight one-point lead over the Panthers leading 10-9 prior to the Panthers four unanswered points which put Tech ahead 13-10.
  • Of the four points, Lexi Lueger, Patelli and Muñoz recorded kills, with Vallecas Rodriguez scoring off a service ace.
  • Another four-point run saw Tech lead 19-15 with kills from Muñoz and Glassgold.
  • With the Panthers a point away from winning the set and match at 24-21, the Eagles would score three in a row to tie the set 24-24.
  • Following an Eagles service error and Muñoz's 14 kill of the match, the Panthers would win the set 26-24 and pick up their first win of the season, defeating Chadron State 3-1.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Florida Tech is now 2-0 all-time against Chadron Sate.
  • Tech outscored the Eagles in points (67 to 59), kills (58-48), service aces (6 to 4), set assists (55 to 45) and digs (87 to 75.)
  • Muñoz led the team on attack ad set new career highs at Tech with 16 points, 14 kills and two service aces.
  • Patelli finished the match with a .381 hitting percentage with 10 kills and just two errors.
  • Courtney Capar set career highs with 22 digs and four assists.
  • Capar and Delacher each recorded 22 digs.
  • Delacher and Hassoun both finished the match with 23 set assists.

MATCH TWO
FINAL: Florida Tech 3, Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.) 0
Records: Florida Tech (2-4, 0-0 SSC), AUM (4-2, 0-0 GSC)

STATS OF THE MATCH:
First Set:
  • Florida Tech and Auburn Montgomery (AUM) battled at the beginning of the set tied 7-7.
  • The Panthers managed to take a small 9-7 two-point advantage over the Warhawks with a kill from Kearns assisted by Capar.
  • AUM tied the set at 14-14, before the Panthers jumped back out to an 18-15 lead.
  • With Tech leading 20-18, kills from Patelli and Muñoz with an ace from Vallecas Rodriguez increased its lead by five at 23-18.
  • A small three point run by the Warhawks was not enough as the Panthers closed out the first set with a 25-21 win to lead the match 1-0.
 
Second Set:
  • Momentum continued to roll as the second set began with four unanswered points by the Panthers with three kills in a row from Vallecas Rodriguez, Lueger and Patelli capped off with a service ace from Delacher.
  • As AUM trailed 6-2, the Warhawks would manage to take the lead 7-6 following five unanswered points.
  • AUM took a small lead over Tech 11-9, before the Panthers would battle back and tie the set up at 13-13.
  • Tied 17-17, the Crimson and Gray managed to score five of the next six points to lead 22-18.
  • Tech would trail for the remainder of the set as AUM tied the set at 24-24.
  • Tech managed receive the final two points winning 28-26 and taking a 2-0 lead over the Warhawks heading into the third set.
 
Third Set
  • The Panthers found themselves with a 3-0 lead to start the third set before the Warhawks scored four unanswered to take the lead 4-3.
  • Tied 6-6, AUM was able to score three in a row before a big six point run from the Panthers pushed Tech to a 12-9 lead.
  • The big run came thanks to kills from Muñoz, Kearns, Glassgold and two kills from Vallecas Rodriguez.
  • With the Crimson and Gray leading 17-15, the Panthers put together seven unanswered points to come within one point of winning the set leading 24-15.
  • The big run by Tech came as a large part of Hassoun's serving, recording three of the seven points off service aces.
  • AUM managed to record four straight points with the match on the before a kill from Muñoz closed out the set and grant Tech it's first 3-0 win of the season.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Tech is now 2-0 against the Warhawks with the two teams last meeting occurring on October 20, 2018, at the Orland South Region Crossover.
  • Tech outscored AUM in of the all six key statistical categories of points (54 to 46), Kills (38 to 35), service aces (7 to 5), blocks (9 to 6), set assists (36 to 32) and digs (58 to 54).
  • Kearns led the Panthers with 10 kills.
  • Hassoun's three aces in the final set was a team high for Tech.
  • Patelli was a part of five of the Panthers blocks from four block assists and one solo block.
  • Delacher led the team with 14 set assists.
  • Capar was the team leader in the digs category totaling 14.
 
UP NEXT:
Florida Tech will head back to Winter Park for its second day of the Rollins Invitational on Saturday, September 9th. The Panthers first match will take place at 9:00 A.M. against Bluefield State before facing off against Tusculum at 5:30 PM later in the evening.
