Men’s Basketball Falls Short on the Road Against Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Florida Tech men's basketball team dropped its midweek road contest to Rollins, 87-71, on Tuesday night in Winter Park, Fla.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Florida Tech 71, Rollins 87
Records: Florida Tech (12-6, 5-6 SSC), Rollins (6-13, 3-9 SSC)

FIRST HALF:
  • Rollins started the game with four straight baskets to go up 8-0 early.
  • Elias Martin converted a three-point play to put Tech on the board and make it 8-3 at the 15:02 mark.
  • A few possessions later, Niall Harris knocked down a three-point jumper for the Panthers to make it 10-6.
  • Both teams exchanged a few baskets before the Tars rattled off an 8-2 run to go up 23-12 with just over nine minutes left in the half.
  • The back-and-forth continued for the next several minutes, but Rollins would begin to outshoot the Panthers and held a 34-17 lead with 3:17 left on the clock.
  • Tech would close out the half on an 11-5 run capped off by a triple from Chase Thompson and a made free throw by David McCullough in the last minute to head into halftime with a 39-28 deficit.
 
SECOND HALF:
  • Both teams traded baskets to begin the half. Two free throws for the Tars gave them a 48-32 lead with 17:05 on the clock.
  • Rollins would tear off a 14-4 run capped by a dunk by Sergey Grishaev to go up 62-36 at the 13:53 mark.
  • 17-6 run capped by three consecutive field goals from Rahsaan Edwards to cut the lead down to 68-53 with just under 10 minutes to play.
  • The back and forth would continue for the next few minutes. A three-point jumper by Edwards would bring the lead down to 73-60 with 7:22 left.
  • Both teams traded possessions and shots for the remaining of the game, but the lead was too much for Tech to overcome, and the game finished with a final score of 87-71.
 
NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • Rahsaan Edwards led the Panthers tonight with 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting, including 3-for-7 from beyond the arc. He also dished out eight assists and pulled in four rebounds.
  • Elias Martin scored 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting. He also blocked three shots and stole the ball twice.
  • David McCullough recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Florida Tech moves to 34-70 all-time against Rollins, including 19-27 in Winter Park.
  • Niall Harris has now recorded five rebounds in 23 straight games, dating back to February of last season.
  • Elias Martin is just one block shy of 100 in his career. He would become just the fifth Panther in program history to achieve this milestone, and the first since Corbin Jackson ('14).
 
UP NEXT: Florida Tech will next play on Saturday, Feb. 3 when the Panthers host Embry-Riddle for a weekend SSC matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Clemente Center in Melbourne, Fla.
