Panthers Pickup SSC Win in Winter Park Against Tars

WINTER PARK, Fla.-  Florida Tech women's basketball picked up its first conference win of the season against the Rollins Tars in Winter Park by a score of 58-53 on Wednesday Night in a Sunshine State Conference Week night matchup.

FIRST QUARTER 
  • Breazia Robinson got the kicked off the Panthers 8-3 run to start the first.
  • Rollin's first three points came from a three-point shot by Faith Newton.
  • Gillard Ajalon would score on a fast break followed by a layup from Maddie Dinger to give Tech just a one-point lead.
  • Emily Acampora first three of the game came off a fast break to extend the Panthers lead to 11-7.
  • The Tars would go on to outscore Tech 3-2 before a three from Acampora put the Panthers ahead 16-10.
  • Kaitlyn Sanders would record the final points in the first to make it 16-12, Florida Tech.
 
SECOND QUARTER
  • Tech would put the first five points on the board as Sarah Liberatore would open the second quarter on a second-chance layup after driving to the basket before Tai Roberts would hit the three of a quick transition.
  • Sanders would respond with a three of her own to make it 21-15, Florida Tech.
  • Both teams would go cold for the next 4:03.
  • Both teams would go on to score five points within a minute at the 4:13 mark with Acampora recording her third three of the game followed by a layup.
  • Olivia Stephens would knock down her first three of the game to put the Panthers ahead 29-20 before Lucy Leen of Rollins would make a three for the Tars.
  • Tech would outscore Rollins 3-2 in the final 1:32 of the quarter to give Tech a seven point, 32-25 lead.
 
THIRD QUARTER 
  • a step back jumper by Robinson would get the Panthers their first points of the third.
  • Rollins would responsd with back-to-back threes to cut its deficit to 34-31.
  • Tech managed to extend its lead once again to seven, 38-31.
  • Liberatore would knock down a three off a turnover put Tech ahead 41-33.
  • Following two made free throws by Acampora, Leen would knock down a pullup jumper for the Tars before Kyandra Poitier would answer back with a step back jumper of her own at the 3:39 mark.
  • Neither team would score until there was 1:36 to play in the third as Newton would record a three and Roberts would respond with a driving layup thirty-second later.
  • Neither team would score in the final minute as Tech would take a 47-48 lead entering the fourth quarter.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
  • The Panthers would record their largest lead of the contest, ahead by 11 following a jumper from Roberts.
  • Following a free throw by Dillinger, neither team would record a point for the next 1:13.
  • Both teams would record two free throw to make it 51-41.
  • Rollins would go on to cut Tech's led to six, 53-47 with 5:31 to play.
  • Rollins record the only point from either side over the course of 2:34 before Erin Leigh would hit a three to make it just a two-point, 53-51 Florida Tech lead with 2:57 to play.
  • Roberts would drive to the basket with 1:06 to play to out the Panthers ahead by four, 55-51.
  • Dillinger would knock down both free throws to bring It back to a two-point game, 55-52.
  • Roberts would be fouled and sent to the line, making one free throw to give Tech a two-score lead.
  • Following a foul, Stephens would knock down both free throws to extend the Panthers lead to 58-53 with two seconds remaining.
  • As the clock expired the Panthers would head back to Melbourne with 58-53 win.
 
NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • Tai Roberts would guide the lead the Panthers with 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists.
  • Emily Acampora would knock down four field goals with a total of three threes for 13 points.
  • Sarah Liberatore and Breazia Robinson would be the other two panthers to record double-digit points with 10 points.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Head Coach John Reynolds recorded his 595th career win.
  • With one block, Lina Stranger-Johannessen moves into 10th in program history in career blocks. She is just the fourth player in program history, and the first since Shayla Fisher reached it in 2005, to have 100 or more steals and 50 or more blocks. 
  • With 14 points, Sophomore Tai Roberts surpasses 500 career points for a total of 506 career points.
  • Florida Tech is now 26-60 all-time against the Tars.
  • It's the Panthers first win at Rollins since 2017 in the SSC Quarterfinals.
  • Florida Tech shot 42.3% (22-52) in field goals, 33.3% (6-18) from beyond the arch and shot 47.1% (8-17) at the free throw line.
  • Rollins finished with a field goal percentage of 31.0% (18-58), shot 21.2% (7-33) in three's while making 62.5% (10-16) of its free throws.
 
UP NEXT:
The Panthers will have return to action at home on Saturday, February 3rd to take on the Embry-Riddle Eagles in a weekend SSC matchup scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
